What is the Job of a Wedding DJ?
Over the past five years and 150+ weddings, my view of what it means to be a wedding DJ has evolved significantly. Each wedding has shown me more of what can go wrong and why my role is so crucial.
When I first started, I might have had a simpler view of the job. Today, I understand that my job is about crafting magical moments and bringing people together.
Many DJs might get a bad wrap because they think their job is to show up, play a few songs, make some announcements, and have a good time. Some couples may believe they're just hiring someone with equipment to play music. While that might be true in some cases, my approach is different.
I aim to execute special moments perfectly and create other magical experiences throughout the day with the tools and talents I've been blessed with. I may not be the best DJ, emcee, saxophonist, planner, audio technician, or hype man individually. However, I believe I am skilled in all these areas, and when combined, they enable me to create magical moments on each wedding day.
As I approach three years in business at the end of this month, I have been reflecting on the changes I've undergone and the evolution of my business. There’s a reason saxophone is now included in all my wedding packages. There’s a reason I invest in a planning app and limit myself to around 20 weddings a year instead of 30-40. There’s also a reason my rates have doubled since I started. I value what I do, and I believe my services are the X factor in making weddings successful.
In the coming months, my brand will be undergoing some changes. I’ll be getting a new logo, a new business name, and possibly more. DJing is just one aspect of what I do, and I’ve outgrown "DJ Mitch Entertainment." The name for my business should reflect all the skills and services I offer.
"Mitch Rand Entertainment" encapsulates everything couples and their guests receive and more. This is why I will be changing my business name over the next few months!
