Pampus dying this weekend, hung on the line to hopefully dry before the weather changes. Last time I dyed pampus I got impatient and dried it with a hair dryer in our bedroom, worked a treat but took me several months to get rid of all the bits of pampus that I'd blown around the room. I'll be selling it by the stem and making it into wreaths wen it's fluffed up again.

My polytunnel becomes redundant in the summer, I grow a few tomatoes but I'm the only one in the household who likes them. This year I thought I'd try growing ornamental gourds, I planted a few plants in the polytunnel beds and a few outside over the chicken run. To say they have gone mad in the polytunnel is an understatement!! But they are producing lots of fruit compared to the outdoor grown ones.

I sowed my sunflowers in early June this year as I wanted them to flower in September, I thought they would make a nice addition to more Autumnal looking bunches. They are just getting into their stride now, producing some nice strong branching stems. My favourite has to be Helianthus Ruby Eclipse featuring in the first photo, followed closely by Helianthus Sonja, a golden yellow mini sunflower and then Helianthus Vanilla Ice the cream one featured in the last picture. I also have some Helianthus Gummy Bear nearly out, not sure how good a cut flower it's going to be, but watch this space!

A great dried flower harvest this weekend. It's not been ideal weather for air drying flowers outside this year as it's been so damp. I hang the flowers upside down from the roof in my workshop, the roof isn't always reliably waterproof but it is open fronted so lots of air is able to circulate to help with drying. My first batch of flowers have dried now and are being stored, making way for this next batch.

Summer bunches delivered this morning to and West Dean Stores. A feast for the senses, beautifully scented with stocks, sweet pea tendrils, mint, oregano and borage ( which smells a bit like cucumber) Lots of texture and froth from the Ammi and the first of the Panicum frosted explosion, and also making an appearance the first of the scabious. And spot the Chrysanthemum which shouldn't be flowering until Autumn but has got a bit confused!!

Nigellia 'blue star' is new to me but what a beauty. It has very pretty pale blue star shaped flowers produced on quite wiry delicate looking stems. I was disappointed when it first started flowering thinking that it wouldn't make a good cut flower as it was so fragile looking, how wrong was I ! I always test a new flower indoors first before putting it in my bunches just to check it holds up well, this stem is now 1week old and still looking great. It will definitely be featuring in my bunches over the next couple of weeks.
