A Floral Designer Gives 9 Flower
Arranging Tips

Hi, everyone! My name is Nette, and I'm the floral
designer behind Fine Petals.

I've been arranging flowers professionally for a couple of years. In order to stay up-to-date with trends, I have close relationships with flowers, and I will share some of what I used to do here.

1. Always trim flo​​wers at an angle.
Trim your stems to the desired length and cut the
stems' ends at an angle.

2. Remove any foliage that will be below water level.
It’s important to keep foliage out of the water because it causes bacteria growth which will, in turn, cause your flowers to die more quickly.

3. Use a clean vase.
If you use the same vase repeatedly for fresh flowers,
it’s important to actually wash the vase between
bouquets (don’t just rinse, but actually use soap and
hot water)

4. Refresh the water daily.
This extra step can help prolong the life of your
blooms, exponentially. When you change the water,
you are literally removing bacteria.

5. Give your arrangement some flower food.
You know those little packets you often get when you
buy flowers? They’re totally worth using! The sugary
formula feeds your flowers and keeps them vibrant
longer.

6. Use fresh, local, and seasonal flowers.
One of the things I love about floral design is that it
brings a little piece of the outdoors into our homes. I
believe that the most beautiful flowers are those you
get closest to your home.

7. Incorporate unexpected elements.
A fun way to make your arrangements interesting is to use non-traditional botanical elements. Blueberry
branches, artichokes, or pomegranates are fun
options.

8. Create a tape grid or use chicken wire.
It can be challenging to get your stems to stay in place without a little help. I recommend using a tape grid on clear vases or building a sphere of chicken wire (for extra design control) plus a tape grid on opaque vases.

9. Be strategic as you layer elements.
Start by creating a base with greenery, adding focal
points and then filling in with your remaining
ingredients.

✅Cut the Stems Forgetting to cut the stems after
receiving flowers is one of the most common blunders individuals make. Cut one to two inches off with garden shears, cutting at an angle.

✅ Prune Remove any leaves below the waterline. It
will not only make your bouquet look better, but also
prevent bacterial growth.

✅ Water WiselyIt's critical to not only hydrate your
bouquet but to do it intelligently. Without water, your
flowers will perish quickly, especially if the stems have been chopped.

✅ Avoid Direct Sunlight, Heat, Drafts, and Fruit In a
room with cool temps, your flowers will stay longer.
Avoid displaying them in direct sunlight or near

What is the best way to take care of a
flower arrangement?

A bouquet of flowers looks lovely and fragrant, but
they need special care to keep them fresh and vibrant.

A common misperception Most people believe that
simply watering their flowers is sufficient, but there are flower care tips that might help. It is dependent on the packaging:

✅ If you receive flowers in a container with floral
foam, be certain the container is full of water every
day. The water should be treated with the floral food
provided by your florist. Using your finger, feel under
the greens for a place where water can be added. Or
you can pour water slowly into the center of the
arrangement, keeping a finger in the container to
gauge the water level.

✅ If you receive flowers in a vase, check to be sure
the water is always clear. If the water turns cloudy,
empty it and add fresh water mixed with the floral food provided by your florist. If possible, re-cut the stems with a sharp knife before placing them in the
freshwater.

✅ If you receive flowers in a box or tissue, remove all of the foliage that falls below the waterline, then cut the stems with a sharp knife in a sink full of warm
water. Be sure to cut the stems under the water and
place them immediately into a vase of warm water
mixed with the floral food provided by your florist.

Want to change the water in your stunning flower arrangement? We got you covered.

Flower arranging doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming. This simple guide is a fast and easy way to change the water for your flowers.

✅ First remove any dead or dying flowers from the
arrangement.

✅ After carefully removing the good flowers, clean the vase thoroughly with soapy water to remove any bacteria that could cause the fresh flowers to deteriorate even quicker. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.

✅ Replace the water and mix in the flower
preservative provided by your florist, according to the
instructions on the packet.

✅ For best results, cut stems with a sharp knife at an angle about one to two inches from the bottom. This allows them to better absorb water. Do not use scissors to cut your flowers because they can crush the stems and prevent water absorption.

✅ Place loose stems or wrapped bouquets of fresh flowers in your water mixture as soon as possible.

A lot of people are confused when it comes to changing the water in their flower arrangements.

Many think that they need to change the water every few days, but that is not true at all.

The right time to change out your flowers' water is when you notice a yellow tint or if the flowers start looking droopy.

I'm going to talk about how to keep your flowers looking fresh so your arrangements

Here are a few tips you won't want to miss.

✅ Keep your vase filled with water! All flower and foliage stems should be submerged. ✅ Flowers stay fresher, longer when they can get a drink!
✅ If your flowers came in a basket or other container with foam, add fresh water every day.
✅ Immediately remove dead or wilting leaves and stems from fresh flower arrangements.
✅Watch your water. When it gets cloudy it’s time to change it out.
