The role of a Civil Celebrant
Civil celebrants lead funeral services which may have no religious context at all or include a mixture of things that were important to the person who died, which may include prayers or favourite hymns and will focus on remembering the life of the person who has died.
We offer our funeral celebrant to help you plan an order of service and ensure that it reflects how you want the person to be remembered, discussing any funeral poems or readings, songs our celebrant.
We would usually meet with you and any family or friends involved discussing your wishes and ideas, although due to current government restrictions during the pandemic will discuss content by online meetings, phone, and email.
If we already know your family, he will ask about the person who has died, to get a sense of who they were and what they meant to you and will use this information to write a eulogy about the person and their life, which the celebrant will deliver during the service.
Our celebrant’s role will include planning and leading a funeral ceremony that can reflect what the person believed, how they lived, and to celebrate their life. If you’re unfamiliar with what to expect, he will talk you through this and invite you to share ideas and wishes for those elements of the service where it’s appropriate for family and friends to share what they’d like to say, be read aloud, sung or played.
It’s okay to get emotional when you are talking about your loved one and plans for their funeral – our celebrant will listen and understand. If you are giving a eulogy, doing a reading, or perhaps singing, our funeral celebrant will invite you pay your tribute, when the moment comes. Speaking, reading, or singing at a funeral can be emotional, nerve-wracking or both. A big part of our celebrant’s role is to help you feel reassured and supported on the day.
