It’s Fun Fact Friday!

: In their last Columbus demonstration in 1995, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels transport aircraft, “Fat Albert”, was a C-130 Hercules. In 2020, the Blue Angels upgraded to a C-130J Super Hercules.

Pretty cool right? Well it’s about to get even cooler…

Not only is this Fat Albert’s first Columbus appearance since 1995, it’s also the official Columbus debut of the C-130J platform! The C-130J can climb fast and higher, fly farther at a higher cruise speed, and take off and land in a shorter distance.

One last ride for Team ‘22!

The 2022 officer team completed their final delta flight, all together, today. This signifies the end of an amazing season before we transition to Team ‘23. We are grateful for their leadership, skill, and dedication to !

Stay tuned as we welcome our incoming Thunderbirds and train for next season!

On this day 79 years ago, the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) reported to Lockbourne (now known as Rickenbacker) to officially begin their training.

This was an experimental program to determine if women could successfully pilot a wide array of aircraft to help alleviate the strain of manpower at the peak of the war.

WASP at Lockbourne were trained to handle B-17s in different conditions such as fire, dead engines, weather, and more. In the end WASP at Lockbourne proved to be a success with 13 fully qualified test pilots, four with instructor status, and zero accidents.

The B-17, “Yankee Lady,” from the Yankee Air Museum will fly at the Columbus Air Show Presented by Scotts next year in honor of the WASP who lived and trained at Lockbourne.

The F-5 will perform flyovers and be on ground display each day of the show!
