The 2022 flower season is in the books!

This season…
*We had 2 customers get their 6th bouquet free with our new punch cards…thank you to Joni King and Marla Crum for being our best customers! 🥰

*We also had several new customers this season, we hoped you enjoyed your flowers! 💐

*We were able to donate $150 to a local organization. Vivian has been interested in making sure we are helping to make our environment a healthier place to live for all creatures as well as keeping our water clean, so we decided to donate to Prairie Rivers of Iowa, a nonprofit organization in Ames who strives to do that. 🐝🌾💧

It was another successful flower season for us! Thank you to all those that have supported us over the past 3 seasons. We love that we can brighten up your day and spread a little joy! ❤️ We plan to be back for a 4th season. Be on the lookout for our posts when the flowers start to bloom in 2023, but until then enjoy the fall and winter months.

We want to thank everyone who made the first season of A&V’s Flowers a success! We went above and beyond the goal we set for ourselves, so THANK YOU for making that possible! In total, we made 121 bouquets! We made the decision to donate 30% of our profits to local organizations. The organizations we chose were Iowa Wildlife Center and Food at First. The rest of our profits will be put back into the business, into our college funds, and we still have some leftover for us to spend! 😊 We learned a lot from running the business this summer like time management, customer service, and working together as a team. There were many frustrating times, but there were also many good times. The best part was making people smile, spreading a little joy during this crazy time, and in the end being able to help out a couple of local organizations. We are planning on doing this again next Spring/Summer and will be purchasing bulbs and seeds soon. If you have some flowers you would like us to try for bouquets next season, let us know! Thank you again for all the support, we had an awesome first season! 💐

Bloom Spotlight of the Week...
Black-eyed Susan

*Black-eyed Susan is an opportunist that thrives easily in disturbed areas.

*It is a bright yellow.

*It has naturalized through most of the continent.

*It can grow to be about two feet tall.

*It blooms in June, July, August, September, and October.

*This flower is also deer resistant.

Bloom Spotlight of the Week...
Butterfly Milkweed

*Butterfly Milkweed is a beautiful, medium, orange flower. It can grow to be 2-3 feet tall.

*It blooms in June, July, and August.

*Butterfly milkweed is poisonous if ingested in large quantities.

*Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to the bright orange flowers of butterfly milkweed and feed on the nectar.

*Adult female monarch butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves. When the larvae hatch, they feed exclusively on milkweed leaves. The larvae develop into caterpillars with black, white and yellow stripes.

*Both the caterpillars and butterflies are poisonous to predators because they have taken in the toxins of the milkweed plant.

*These butterflies then migrate south to Florida, Texas, and eventually Mexico and return again the following spring.

Today we started harvesting some things from our vegetable garden!

We have the following for sale...

Bloom Spotlight of the week is...
Missouri Evening Primrose

*The scientific name for this plant is Oenothera macrocarpa.

*Missouri Evening Primrose is a pretty, short, yellow flower.

*The plant can grow to be 12 inches tall.

*It is a sprawling, Iowa native plant which occurs on limestone glades and bluffs and rocky prairies.

*The plant is perennial; it dies back every fall and winter and then returns in the spring from its rootstock.

*It blooms in May, June, July, and August.

*It is deer and rabbit resistant.

Bloom Spotlight of the Week is...
Bradbury’s Monarda

*The scientific name is Monarda bradburiana.

*You might be familiar with Bee Balm (also known as Wild Bergamot and Monarda) which is a cousin to Bradbury’s Monarda.

*Bradbury's Monarda is much shorter than its cousin, and grows to a height of only 1 to 2 ft (30 to 60 cm).

*Their blooms can be a variety of different colors like purple, red, white, and pink. In our garden, we have the native kind of Bradbury’s Monarda and it is pink. It is in bloom during June and July.

*Bradbury’s Monarda is in the mint family so it has a minty smell to it.

*It is also deer resistant, and will attract many pollinating insects

During this time of quarantine, Amelia and Vivian decided to try their hand at starting a small business. Which is how the idea of A & V’s Flowers came about. There will be many different flowers in bloom around our house this year and we will be offering $5.00 single bouquets and $10 double bouquets. Free mint comes with each bouquet and we also have mint bunches for sale. We will be posting updates about the flowers we have in bloom and what we have for sale. Thank you! 💐
