The Fife Arms in Braemar is such a wonderful treasure trove of art. Every piece has a story behind how and why it came to be there, and there are 16,000+ pieces! Shona is an incredible & interesting guide, I could have listened to her all day. She brought the art to life.

Thoroughly recommend having your wedding here or just a drink in the bar if you can 🥂and enjoy this wonderful hotel.

Chris, Kate & Magnus

The ultimate full-time adventure family!

Had a great evening last night at .seafood listening to Chris, Kate and wee son Magnus tell us about their epic 6 year adventure walking the whole coastline of Britain (including all the islands) and Chris’s remarkable battle with mental health problems, sleeping in a tent (with a hole in it) through every weather possible, foraging to survive - not to mention the midges and spiders!
Thankfully he battled through and his whole world changed on the walk.

Steph and Barney chose the idyllic near Inverness to host their sunny, summer wedding with their two children and close friends.

Their ceremony was relaxed, romantic and very stylish with Steph looking amazing in an ivory bodice and soft, flowing trousers and Barney in a very smart blue suit.

Highland Registrars conducted their wedding ceremony and Fiona from designed the beautiful crowns, bouquets and button-holes, all delivered on the day.

You’ll not be frightened of wasps on your wedding day after reading this. And, how about such a beautiful venue to say your vows as the St Cyrus Nature Reserve on Scotland’s east coast.

Happy Friday! 🙂 All I want for Christmas is to just Bzzzzzzzzzz!

I know not everyone loves a wasp, I get asked this question all the time about the more unpopular species ‘but what are they good for?!’

The importance of the humble wasp is HUGE! It is as fascinating as it is beneficial to the ecosystem and to us humans!

The workers spend the summer foraging, some for nectar, others for wood to expand the nest and some searching for prey. The adult wasps take crop-eating insects (they love a soft caterpillar!) to feed to their young, acting as a natural form of pest control and giving gardeners and farmers a helping hand. They are also really important pollinators.

Through the summer the wasp larvae rely on the workers to feed them, the workers chew their food up, caterpillars, flies and so on, and then tenderly feed the larvae, then the larvae provide the workers with with sugar rich saliva to drink! This relationship is critical, the adult worker wasps waists are so thin that the digestive tract is constricted to the point that they can't digest the high protein food that they bring back to the nest so this relationship is vital, win win! I chew for you, you digest and then you give me sugar water!

In the autumn new queens are produced, they mate and then find a place to bzzzzzzz the winter away, the rest of the colony dies, just the ‘pregnant’ queens live on.

This is one of several beautiful common queen wasps we have found tucked up for winter in our log pile. I love how they hang upside-down, clasping the wood with their mandibles, and their antennae and wings all tucked underneath, zoom up it’s amazing! We have placed each queen back in the wood pile, with her wood marked 'BzzzzBzzzz' (for 'a wasp sleeps here'), so we don't disturb her again.

Do check your logs before you burn them, having them around may just make the difference for your garden and crops next year!
