A La Carte weddings do not include onsite set up or large installs, this package is geared towards couple who are going minimal and don’t need precise customization; ya know, the laid back bride!

Here are some of the most common “money saving” requests I have had recently that don’t actually save you $$.
💍 “Can we do large arrangements on pillars for the ceremony”? If you’re using this as a way to save money, stop right there. It won’t! I LOVE this aesthetic but those large urn arrangements can cost $500+ each!
WHY: an urn takes a lot of flowers to fill and generally the desired effect is to design with large branches and really tall flower stems. These can start at $500+ each urn, most are closer to $1,000 each.
💍 “Let’s used dried flowers instead of fresh”. STAWP! Dried flowers cost more than fresh, every, single, time! Dried flowers are generally the cost of fresh with an added 10-20%. Think about it.
WHY: The dried flower has to be harvested at the right time, dried for a minimum of 2 weeks, and stored which takes room. If you live in a really humid place you may need to do more to ensure they don’t mold and attract moths. This costs the farmer more time and more space so these are not as cost effective as some believe.
💍 “can we just use all greenery”? Okay look, this one can be tricky and in some cases could save you a little but in most cases won’t.
WHY: we like to use various greens that have different veining, shapes, color undertones, and textures. Just slapping some silver dollar eucalyptus is not pretty and is one dimensional. Greens cost, those fun tropical super large leaves are more than you may think.
💍 “bud vases are smaller than an arrangement, let’s do a line”. Okay so I really like this look, if done correctly. Recently we’ve seen some pretty cool tablescapes with bud vases only but here’s the truth…
WHY: bud vases usually run $25-$35 each and take more time in labor to set up. Let’s say you have an 8’ table. At a minimal that’s 5-7 bud vases! Doing that math, you’re looking at $125-$245, that’s the cost of our small centerpiece. But guess what…the centerpiece
Something that I find commonly forgotten when a bride and groom are planning their wedding; it’s THEIR wedding!

We really enjoy showing you what seasonality looks like. Consistency in flower varieties isn’t our game, that’s why “competing” with big box grocery stores is just something we don’t do. Our flowers don’t look like what you can get from Raleys; we do this intentionally. Local flowers change week from week and in some cases day by day. Your local climate, cold spells, heat waves and native bug population really dictate what you can provide.
Today we can provide bouquets that are both colorful and abundant which include our second week of dahlias! There are some juicy girls in there.
As another heat waves moves through northern #nevada our flowers will slow and only grow during the wee hours of the morning. More water and lots of pep talks are in store this week.

Building compost isn’t as scary (or smelly) as it may seem, let’s build our first compost pile together!
Step 1:
Brown material. Things like old #cowpots ,bark mulch, leaves, and unbleached paper.
Step 2:
Water! If you’re in the high desert especially you must add water to your compost piles. Compost is an active live life source and just like us, needs water. You will use the most water in the first and second bins (or when you begin and after your first turn)
Step 3
Layer in green materials. Freshly chopped plants, your old food scraps, and livestock manure. This is where having a relationship with a florist that only uses #localflowers and #chemicalfree flowers comes in handy!
Step 4
While the green material has lots of water in it, we water again! On average the high desert air in #nevada hovers around 10-20% so compost bins dry out fast!
Step 5
Add in your final layer of brown material (here we’ve used bark mulch and leaves collected in the previous fall), and water.
Step 6
Cover with a plastic tarp and let sit for a good while. You will begin to see your material shrink. Check it a couple times a month to be certain it doesn’t dry out. If it has a foul smell like ammonia you need to add more brown material.
Compost should be really stinky and should break down rather quickly if it’s done properly.

If you’ve been following us for awhile you saw we tried something no one else has done, planting our fall bulbs (tulips, hyacinth and daffodils) over our overwintering dahlias. While we learned the no-dig tulip planting and the overwintering dahlia method from our friends @notillflowers I like to push the limit and break the “normal” down as much as possible. It’s what I’ve done since I was a wee tot. While it wasn’t as successful as I’d hoped it wasn’t a total failure either. The dahlias that did survive look AMAZING!
So while many would not do this again, I take this as a learning experience and an opportunity to continue learning. I’m a habitual learner and chose the perfect career to carry that lust for knowledge with me through life.
Will I do this again…YES! With some better timing for removal of the soil on top of the dahlias and some small changes I think we have found something worth sharing with small scale, micro flower farmers in the #highdesert and in particular #nevada
As we continue to break barriers and explore I invite you to do the same. It can be the smallest change, the tiniest rebellion and yet so powerful.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, are you prepared?

@believeinrecess is whipping up some beautiful pre-wrapped bouquets and will be sprinkling some of our tulips in them. You can pick these bouquets up at @renopublicmarket in @wanderingwyld shop and @bridget_giroux_design in Tahoe.
And finally, for our local #fernley residents, I will be hosting a pop up on the farm on Mothers Day morning from 9-11:30 only (address will be posted next week). We will have fresh tulip bouquets for you to snag before you head over to give your mamas a squeeze.

Farm Friday is a little janky today as our day was sorta highjacked and we just got home to tulips ready for harvest!
Tulip harvesting is in full swing right now demanding our attention 3-4 times a day! This is my second harvest today, I will go back out after the sun goes down for my third.
Tulip farming is not for the faint of heart and in our climate is a job all in itself. From double shade cloth, and hand watering to making sure you catch them at just the right stage of harvest it’s a true labor. Of love? That’s yet to be determined.
Florists, tulips are available for purchase now, spring subscribers you’ll get some of these beauties next week in your first delivery, the stem bar @sierrawatergardens will be freshened up soon, tulip bouquets are currently at and will continue to be stocked @greatbasinfoodcoop and some tulips will be held for your mamas at our Mothers Day Floral Workshop with @wanderingwyld

Giving plants a little hair cut can be scary BUT guess what? Some plants actually really love it! Sweet peas are one that benefit tremendously from “pinching”. Pinching is the act of cutting off the top most part of the plant right above a leaf node and a set of leaves. Pinching encourages vigorous growth from the base of the plant allowing it to be healthier and produce more flowers. We LOVE sweet peas around here so the more flowers, the happier we are! Don’t waste the tops, put them in your compost but don’t EVER feed them to livestock or pets. The entire plant, flower and seed is poisonous! Who else can’t wait for sweet pea season? Sweat peas will be a favorite included in your flower subscription.
