The Post and Courier's 4th Annual Fundraiser and Auction to preserve and sustain journalism was a huge success not just for us and, in particular, our newsroom but also …

• For the people of South Carolina, who will now have many more public service and investigative stories shedding light on what’s happening here in our state.

• It’s a win for our state’s children and teachers through our work with the Education Lab to explore ways we can improve our students’ access to a good education, as well as celebrate the bright spots of schools getting it right.

• It’s imperative to our Rising Waters Lab to bring more attention and solutions to the flooding and climate change problems the Palmetto State is experiencing and will soon face.

• It’s a triumph over excessive and unnecessary Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) fees and obstructions—it grants us much more time to wait it out, keep chasing what we find and ability to bring truth out into the open.

South Carolina, without knowing it, won big last night thanks to the generosity of our subscribers and donors. Their investment in us, their trust in us, their confidence in us… they will move our efforts forward for years to come.

If you weren’t there at the event or didn’t get to support a good cause for Giving Tuesday, please consider giving to The Post and Courier Public Service and Investigate Fund at www.postandcourierfund.com.

🚨IMPORTANT UPDATE🚨

Out of deep concern for the safety of our equine and human athletes, Steeplechase of Charleston presented by Lexus, announces the cancellation of this year's event originally scheduled for Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Stono Ferry Racetrack in Hollywood, SC.

The prolonged drought in our region has left the ground overly hard, dry and lacking suitable turf creating dangerous ground conditions for racing, making this decision necessary for the safety and welfare of both horse and jockey. This determination was reached mutually with the National Steeplechase Association (NSA) and follows similar safety-driven decisions at two other major NSA-sanctioned events this season in Pennsylvania and Virginia, reflecting our sport's unwavering commitment to safety.

"The safety of our horses and jockeys must always come first," said Race Director Toby Edwards. "After consulting with the NSA, we collectively determined that current ground conditions don't meet the standards required for premier steeplechase racing."

Dear BASC Community,

We know how much many of you were looking forward to our upcoming Bicycle Across South Carolina (BASC) event this weekend, October 10-14, 2024. We regret we must cancel BASC, due to extensive damage caused by Hurricane Helene in Edgefield, SC, and surrounding areas. After careful evaluation, we cannot ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

We understand this news is disappointing, and we share in your disappointment.

As many of you know, BASC is hosted by The Post and Courier, a family-owned newspaper committed to serving the South Carolina community. We organize this event to help fund our journalism, providing neighbors with the information they need to stay informed and engaged.

Our thoughts are with our neighbors in the affected areas as they navigate the challenges brought by Hurricane Helene.

We sincerely appreciate your understanding and thank you for your continued support of BASC and local journalism.
