At the last meeting, we celebrated Halloween by having a contest for the scariest story. The winner was awarded three packs of Pocky. First, we all discussed what makes a story scary. It's an interesting question because in storytelling, unlike in the film, you can't rely on jump scares or any sound or visual special effects. There were many valuable and interesting ideas, such as using enclosed spaces in a story and writing about one's own deep fears. One suggested creating a reality in which things would work so differently that it reaches the point o absurdity. Another suggestion was to manipulate the reading pace by using long and short sentences to influence the way the reader breathes. Long sentences for building anticipation and short ones for creating a feeling of panic. After discussions, we put a timer at 25 minutes and set about writing. Even though time was limited, all the stories came out very original and, most importantly, scary. Maybe it was the prize, but it seemed that everyone worked especially hard in this competition. According to anonymous voting, the most terrifying story was Sam's one, and we congratulate him on that!
All in all, the evening was a success. Partly because this time, we gathered in a cozy and quiet Language Lab that would become our permanent meeting place this winter. The place is perfect for writing, discussing, and sharing the works. Next time, on the 20th of November, we'll meet up in an art gallery because we're going to an exhibition of Soga Shohaku's works! And right after that, we'll have our regular writing session. Everyone is welcome!
