At this year’s , Caribbean Face Off & Seishonen Guyana launched “the Original Character (OC) Cosplay Competition”

This collaborative cosplay category aimed to introduce creative expression to Guyanese by providing them with the opportunity to create & cosplay as their own fictionalized character

Typically, people cosplay as pre-existing characters from their favorite anime, movie, tv show, game etc

However, with this competition, participants designed their own character’s backstory, motives, special skills and more.

Our three participants cosplayed as:
➖ The Vermillion Virus
➖ Pulse Sentinel
➖ Ole Higue Witch

The Vermillion Virus (cosplayed by .de.roberto) won for his creation & performance. He was awarded 60,000 GYD + an additional 20,000 GYD as a tip from Caribbean Face Off

Vendor Booth Competition
Participant 4: Iris Merch

Iris Merch combined both our Folklore theme & Christmas into their booth design!

We asked Carina to share her inspiration behind the design and she had this to say:

“At Fumacon, my booth was a whimsical dive into Folklore Christmas with a fun twist! I took inspiration from Guyanese legends and blended them with a little pop culture flair. Dressed as Charlie from Hazbin Hotel—or as we say locally, a Jumbie—I brought the spirit of the season with a dash of the supernatural!

The display featured drop fairy lists reimagined as Ole Higue, while my key ring holders transformed into iconic Guyanese spirits like the Bush Dai Dai, Bacoo, and Kanaima. It was an ambitious project and, while things didn’t go exactly as planned (thanks to a few setbacks and time crunches), it was an exciting and creative journey.

In the end, it turned out to be one of my largest displays yet! Even if it wasn’t perfect, seeing it come to life and sharing it with everyone made it all worthwhile.”

Participant 3: Darcy’s Knick Knacks

We asked Julia about her booth design for this edition of FumaCon & she said this:

“When Fumacon first announced the theme, I immediately thought of the shows and movies of my childhood. Mecha Godzilla, Gundam and Power Rangers.

There were so many things I wanted to include in my booth design, but alas, I’m not as crafty as I hoped and many of my decorations I could not incorporate because I didn’t love how they came out.

So my Gundam backdrop, homemade gears and zorbs may not be absolutely fabulous but they represent a beloved part of my childhood.”

Participant 2: Teen Hustle

Teen Hustle’s booth at FumaCon had artistic interpretations of Guyanese Folkore Characters 🇬🇾

When asked about their booth design, Teen Hustle representatives said this:

“The Depth of Darkness

It was the greatest moment for the old higue to be in the presence of hundreds of children that attended Fumacon 2024. She was seeking her next target and searching silently for the next fledgling to suck upon.

She adorned herself in her black ragged outfit with her scattered hair and bloody face; as she waited on the hour to shed her skin and get into her fiery form of a ball of fire to take to the skies. Her surrounding was jet black and shaded with a tree branch with lanterns and the eerie sounds of bats were present.

She will strike again, at the time and hour of which no one can tell. She will be back for the next kin in line.”

We asked Megan to share the inspiration behind our booth design for this year’s event. This is what she had to say:

“I started thinking of ways to make my booth unique for this year’s vendor booth competition the moment I heard the theme. I was drawn to the folklore tale Moon Gazer due to my fascination with the moon and my desire to incorporate it into the name of my business, Lunar Gift Shop.

I immediately sketched out the layout of my booth after delving further into the Moon Gazer. Then, my friends and I worked really hard to make my vision a reality.”
