Discount Basie I play music for swing dancing – mostly for Lindy Hop and Blues. I started to dance Lindy Hop in 2013, Blues in 2016.

As I'm a music nerd and I've been a DJ in clubs and bars since 2001 (playing mostly Punk, Indie, Northern Soul, Funk etc.), it was only natural to also dig deeply into music for swing dancing and to play it for dancers. Some dance events that I've been playing music at:
- Stay-at-home blues dance parties (8 editions so far)
- Bei mir bist Du schön (2 editions)
- Hülly Blues
- A Sunday kind of blues

If you are on Spotify – as a customer or as an artist – you probably just received your 2020 statistics. While numbers and lists can be fun, I want to take the chance to talk about the stories behind my Top 5 songs. Maybe you don’t know all of them yet and can discover something new.

Black Pumas – OCT 33 (2019)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHB5LrDv0Nk
I heard this song for the first time in early January while sitting at the bar of my favourite restaurant. I instantly fell in love with the song and asked the keeper about it. The sound is a lot like late-60s/early-70s soul – but with a modern touch and not just a 100% sound-a-like. Its melancholic mood and the tempo also makes it a very good song for blues dancing.

Sam Cooke – Summertime
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc6k2NFXmEY
I was a bit surprised to see this one on #2. While I did listen to Sam Cooke a lot over the last months, I wasn’t expecting this. Maybe it just shows my yearning for summer, the ocean, and travelling.

Cat Power – New York
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcybnuVH9kM
I own the LP (with a very beautiful silver and mirroring cover) since it was released and listen to it from time to time. When we started our series of Stay-at-home blues online parties, New York was in pretty deep Corona s**t. I wanted to play a song especially for the New Yorkers who visited our party and remembered this one even though it’s not a blues song. Ever since then it’s in heavy rotation again. BTW: the original version was not done by Frank Sinatra but by Liza Minnelli.

Ruth Brown – I don’t know
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toKYrvxHWOY
Another song that has been around my collection for a long time and got back into heavy rotation. It happened after seeing Holly Golightly live in November 2019. I’m not sure if she played it there or if I discovered her version on her albums before going to see the concert. I love the doubts and uncertainties described in the lyrics and also the desire I hear in the style of singing.

Carsie Blanton – Lovin in easy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5exv3bUoTgk
That's a feeling I miss a lot in pandemic times: Meeting someone new randomly and falling in love (a little bit). Also, I agree a lot with the rest of the lyrics and the ideal of loving someone without the need to own or control this person and without the demand of the other person loving you back. Sometimes complicated in real life – easy-sounding in this song. Also recommended in this context: Cat Baker’s "I fall in love too easily” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zrSoHgAAWo

If you dig into black music of the 1940s to 1960s, you’ll meet the term “Popcorn” sooner or later. When I did research for our series of “Stay-at-home blues” parties, the word came up more and more. The mostly medium tempi, the heavy grooves, and the swing of this music are perfect for blues dancers dancing alone at home. Until lately I was not aware where the name of this genre came from. In the 1970s and 1980s, there was a discotheque in a small village in Belgium called Popcorn and the local DJs defined this sound between Soul, Jazz, R&B, and a pinch of Ska. So Popcorn is the music that was played at The Popcorn – pretty simple. It reminds me a lot of Northern Soul which got its name from being popular in northern England first.

Here’s a short documentary worth watching: https://vimeo.com/24079101

And more to read: https://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2014/feb/05/belgium-popcorn-underground-music-scene-europe-northern-soul - you could listen to this compilation while doing so: https://jazzmanalbums.bandcamp.com/album/follow-me-to-the-popcorn-the-untold-history-of-the-belgium-popcorn-scene

Belgium, 1970. While most radio stations and discotheques are playing the pop and rock hits of the day, a new venue opens in the small village of Vrasene, near Sint-Niklaas.…
