😮 I started DJing in High School, but really took the next leap in college (at Elon University). As a freshman, I went to the campus bars and told them to try me out on a night. Any night. And don't pay me. Just give me an opportunity, and if I was good enough...give me a job.

I got the gig. And then another. And then another. And then before I knew it, I was doing all the campus hot spots, school functions, fraternity & sorority parties, formals & semi-formals, clubs in the neighboring city, and even gigs at other schools. I also landed my own radio show.

I took that approach of walking into places and asking for an unpaid opportunity to prove myself to every place I moved after colleage. It got me gigs all over New England, the Carolinas, Atlanta, Key Largo & Salt Lake City. And it led to me living my dream in an industry I love.

Sadly it happens. Make sure your DJ has a backup plan for illness or emergency. You don't get a do-over. And trying to find someone on short-notice or day-of is difficult, at best.

I can't believe it was 31 years ago this week in 1993 that I claimed my first golf state title, the Maine State High School Individual Golf Championship.

I mean, look at that sweater vest. And the hair curling around the back of that hat. It's almost as sexy as that golf swing used to be, lol.
