Supporting Junior Sailing at BSYC
The Craig Baker Memorial Trust has supported and helped many youth sailors from the Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club to compete at World and National events over the 34 years it has been established. The fund was formed after the sudden death of Craig Baker in 1985 when he was 20 years old. Just a year before his death he won the National 420 title and Australian Youth Championships sailing with Malcolm Higgins. Later in that year they were part of the Australian Team which sailed in the World 420 Championships in Annapolis USA, and finished a credible eleventh.
The aim of the Trust is to promote sailing by young people and to foster Craig's enthusiastic and successful participation in all aspects of his sailing career. The Trust certainly helps us celebrate his life and his sailing achievements by keeping a part of him within the sport that he loved so much. New families come along and although many of our young sailors may not know who Craig is, when sailing the Craig Baker Regatta held each year or congratulating their peer who has received their Grant, it is the participation and enjoyment we see within these kids that continues to strengthen the Trust to keep it going. To date the Trust has given over $80,000 in Grants to BSYC juniors.
