VICTORY! Max Mara Fashion Group has officially announced a fur-free policy! 🎉

This brilliant news for animals is thanks to YOU - everyone who has taken action to urge the Italian fashion giant to adopt a fur-free policy played a role in this victory ❤️️

Our global, a coalition saw more than 270,000 emails, thousands of phone calls, countless social media posts , and even a hot air balloon flown over Max Mara's headquarters asking the brand to go fur-free. Activists around the world came together to ask Max Mara to do the right thing and we're delighted that it's listened, making it clear fur has no place in fashion!

Fur-Free Ohio has had some setbacks when it comes to the fur ban. We’ve spoken at city council twice with excellent reception, and there is a packet of information on Columbus City Council‘s desk and also the Chamber of Commerce. It’s basically at a standstill, so we will keep collecting business signatures and reaching out to CC periodically, and whoever else that can help.

If you are a Columbus business that is against animal cruelty, please visit https://furfreeohio.wixsite.com/home to add your business. It really helps!

We’ll be developing materials on ethical fashion, and pivoting in that direction more, to educate people on their clothing choices. Speaking events and digital presentations are in the works.

At Fur-Free Ohio we have a strong emphasis on fur and also stand against all animals used in fashion.

Every animal used for down, leather, wool, angora, cashmere, silk, and fur live horrible lives treated as objects and commodities. When profits are involved, the animals’ well being is not a factor.

For example, down feathers from ducks and geese are often plucked violently from their sensitive stomachs while they’re alive. It takes about 75 birds to make just one blanket.

Angora rabbit fur is ripped out where the money is strapped down. They scream for their hair is pulled out in this process is repeated after their fur grows back.

Fur animals are gassed, electrocuted, bludgeoned, and are frequently skinned alive.

Cows suffer greatly for the leather industry, and have been documented being skinned alive.

No piece of clothing or accessory (or any animal “product”) is justifiable for their suffering. There are plenty of warm and fashionable alternatives out there to choose from.

Millions of raccoon dogs are bred onto fur farms and sold for their fur each year. China & Finland supply most raccoon dog fur, a lot of which is purchased by the U.S.

After a life of misery stuck in small cages, raccoon dogs are electrocuted, bludgeoned, or slammed against the ground/floor before having their fur taken. These methods don’t always kill them, and they sometimes wake up while they’re being skinned.

Raccoon dogs are in the canid family, like foxes and wolves. They have a dog shaped body and the face of a raccoon, and are generally docile. They are native to Asia.

Mislabeling of raccoon dog fur has been an issue for years. Investigations have found animal fur when the label claimed to be faux. The term “asiatic raccoon” has also been used in labeling, most likely because people do not like the idea of wearing a dog.

Beware of mislabeled products! There is a law called Truth in Fur Labeling Act that was made into law in 2010. Just like any law, enforcement can be an issue. Animal fur tapers to a point at the end while faux has a consistency from bottom to top. An animals’ skin will be attached to animal fur in most cases, and faux will be attached to fabric. Check below the fur and see where it is emerging from. If you find a mislabeled product, it is the job of the Federal Trade Commission to enforce the law. Reach out to them, the Humane Society, or let us know here and we’ll report it.

GREAT NEWS!!! We are thrilled to announce that our friends in Israel have finally achieved the nearly impossible task to have Israel ban all levels of the fur trade. We’ve been together in this fight since early 2000 and we supported their amazing efforts despite countless setbacks due to political intrusion from the fur trade. But they never gave up and continued to pursue the anti-fur bill since 2009, needless to say, due to the corruption of the fur industry and politicians. But nothing stopped them and today & FINALLY THE VICTORY! Our fight will continue worldwide until ALL cages are open.

It is really important to sign and share this petition to show city council that we have support on the need for a fur ban. This is where it begins.

This is why we need a fur ban:

The cruelty of the fur industry is being exposed on a massive scale and people are waking up to the fact that this frivolous "fashion" where animals are tortured and killed so the fur industry can profit is not necessary in any way. It's time for Ohio to follow in the footsteps of New York and California and instate a fur ban that holds up our values of animal welfare and environmental welfare. Israel has banned fur country-wide, and over 300 retailers have banned and/or started fur-free policies.

You can make a difference and speak up against the inhumane treatment of animals. Please sign to show your support of helping fur-bearing animals. Show you're against the use of living beings in fashion - you can be warm and fashionable without the suffering of an animal.

These industries that are defined by violence are nearly unregulated or self-regulated; riddled with conflicts of interest.

Cruelty cases are not isolated. Undercover investigations consistently find heinous & disturbing acts. Unimaginable abuse is common. There are no federal laws protecting animals on fur farms.

They are also a breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant bacteria and zoonotic viruses like SARS and Covid-19.

Animals in the fur industry are killed in gruesome ways. To slaughter, they're electrocuted, gassed, are bludgeoned, or have their necks broken. Sometimes these methods result in unconsciousness and not death, leaving animals to be skinned alive. Multiple pieces of footage have exposed this horrific cruelty.

Forced to endure a life of misery locked up in small wire bottom cages where there is no way to be comfortable, fur bearing animals develop psychological disorders from lack of both space & stimulation. They are denied all natural behaviors. industry standards for cage spaces on fur farms are extremely small; 24" x 16" x 12" for rabbits and 30" x 15" x 12" for mink, for example. To live even an hour locked up this way is unthinkable, let alone a lifetime.

The animals are understandably severely stressed and often self-mutilate or chew on the metal bars. Their excrement falls beneath them, on & through the wires. Animals have strong senses of smell and as you can imagine this is a dreadful & unsanitary way to live.
How many animals are murdered for just one fur coat? approximately: 150-300 chinchillas, 200+ squirrels, 50-60 minks, 30-40 rabbits,15-40 foxes, 15-20 dogs, 8-12 lynx

Estimations per year for all fur animals killed is 100 million. FOR ALL ANIMALS USED FOR FASHION, THE NUMBER IS IN THE BILLIONS.

These industries are not "natural", "green", or "eco-friendly", as they claim. Chemicals are needed to keep the skins from rotting. Animal farms are an environmental disaster, with waste runoff and intensive use of resources. The only time fur can be claimed as natural, is when it stays on the rightful owner: the animal.

All mothers in animal industries are used as breeding machines. Exploited over and over for their reproductive systems and eventually killed when they're no longer profitable, they endure years of forced impregnation & live in intense confinement. They have a motherly instinct similar to humans, and are distressed when their young are taken away.

According to The Humane Society, on trapping: 'Animals trapped in the wild for their fur also suffer greatly. They are commonly caught in archaic body-gripping traps (e.g., snares and leghold traps) or body-crushing traps (e.g., conibear traps). These animals often die slowly by drowning, predation, shock, injury or blood loss. If they are found alive and haven’t gnawed off their own limb to escape, they are often clubbed or suffocated to death in order to preserve their pelt’s value.'

Rule of Thumb: If you wouldn't want it done to you, it is not humane.

Animal industries justify caging, mutilating, and murdering young animals so long as it is profitable. Some argue that it is their personal choice to use animals for luxury (not survival). They are forgetting someone who didn't have a choice: the animal. When another's life is exploited, it is no longer a "personal choice".

Millions of mink have their fur stolen each year.

Mink are used for clothing like coats (50-60 mink are killed for one coat), and also mink lashes, like the ones sold by Kylie Jenner.

The cruel and horrifying fur industry is not only hell on earth where gruesome killing methods are the norm - it’s also an environmental disaster as well.

Taking skin from animals is not a “natural” or eco-friendly alternative to faux fur, as pro-fur people love to claim.

Check out the movie the Farm In My Backyard to learn a lot about some of the environmental impacts and how massive some of these mink farms are. Oh - and also how they regulate themselves... 😤

It touches on animal cruelty, is not graphic that I can remember, and is about 15 minutes long. (On YouTube and some other sites for free)
