It is really important to sign and share this petition to show city council that we have support on the need for a fur ban. This is where it begins.
This is why we need a fur ban:
The cruelty of the fur industry is being exposed on a massive scale and people are waking up to the fact that this frivolous "fashion" where animals are tortured and killed so the fur industry can profit is not necessary in any way. It's time for Ohio to follow in the footsteps of New York and California and instate a fur ban that holds up our values of animal welfare and environmental welfare. Israel has banned fur country-wide, and over 300 retailers have banned and/or started fur-free policies.
You can make a difference and speak up against the inhumane treatment of animals. Please sign to show your support of helping fur-bearing animals. Show you're against the use of living beings in fashion - you can be warm and fashionable without the suffering of an animal.
These industries that are defined by violence are nearly unregulated or self-regulated; riddled with conflicts of interest.
Cruelty cases are not isolated. Undercover investigations consistently find heinous & disturbing acts. Unimaginable abuse is common. There are no federal laws protecting animals on fur farms.
They are also a breeding ground for antibiotic-resistant bacteria and zoonotic viruses like SARS and Covid-19.
Animals in the fur industry are killed in gruesome ways. To slaughter, they're electrocuted, gassed, are bludgeoned, or have their necks broken. Sometimes these methods result in unconsciousness and not death, leaving animals to be skinned alive. Multiple pieces of footage have exposed this horrific cruelty.
Forced to endure a life of misery locked up in small wire bottom cages where there is no way to be comfortable, fur bearing animals develop psychological disorders from lack of both space & stimulation. They are denied all natural behaviors. industry standards for cage spaces on fur farms are extremely small; 24" x 16" x 12" for rabbits and 30" x 15" x 12" for mink, for example. To live even an hour locked up this way is unthinkable, let alone a lifetime.
The animals are understandably severely stressed and often self-mutilate or chew on the metal bars. Their excrement falls beneath them, on & through the wires. Animals have strong senses of smell and as you can imagine this is a dreadful & unsanitary way to live.
How many animals are murdered for just one fur coat? approximately: 150-300 chinchillas, 200+ squirrels, 50-60 minks, 30-40 rabbits,15-40 foxes, 15-20 dogs, 8-12 lynx
Estimations per year for all fur animals killed is 100 million. FOR ALL ANIMALS USED FOR FASHION, THE NUMBER IS IN THE BILLIONS.
These industries are not "natural", "green", or "eco-friendly", as they claim. Chemicals are needed to keep the skins from rotting. Animal farms are an environmental disaster, with waste runoff and intensive use of resources. The only time fur can be claimed as natural, is when it stays on the rightful owner: the animal.
All mothers in animal industries are used as breeding machines. Exploited over and over for their reproductive systems and eventually killed when they're no longer profitable, they endure years of forced impregnation & live in intense confinement. They have a motherly instinct similar to humans, and are distressed when their young are taken away.
According to The Humane Society, on trapping: 'Animals trapped in the wild for their fur also suffer greatly. They are commonly caught in archaic body-gripping traps (e.g., snares and leghold traps) or body-crushing traps (e.g., conibear traps). These animals often die slowly by drowning, predation, shock, injury or blood loss. If they are found alive and haven’t gnawed off their own limb to escape, they are often clubbed or suffocated to death in order to preserve their pelt’s value.'
Rule of Thumb: If you wouldn't want it done to you, it is not humane.
Animal industries justify caging, mutilating, and murdering young animals so long as it is profitable. Some argue that it is their personal choice to use animals for luxury (not survival). They are forgetting someone who didn't have a choice: the animal. When another's life is exploited, it is no longer a "personal choice".
An Ohio Fur Ban is needed - Stand up for animals and against the horrific fur industry
