In October England will get new legislation banning more single-use plastic items. This follows existing bans on microbeads in beauty products, plastic straws, plastic-stemmed cotton buds and more.
The ban will include:
🚫 Single-use plastic plates, bowls and trays
🚫 Single-use plastic cutlery including knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks
🚫 Plastic balloon sticks
🚫 Polystyrene cups and containers
This is similar to bans already in place in Scotland, the EU and many other countries and states around the world.
Interestingly the ban in England will also include single-use items made from bioplastics. These are plastics made from an organic source like corn starch and sugar cane rather than oil.
One of the alternatives is to switch to single-use items made from a natural material like wood, paper, cardboard, bamboo and even palm leaves. These will breakdown after use much more quickly than plastics, and don't leave behind any nasty toxins. Retailers and food outlets are already starting to switch to these.
However switching to reusables wherever possible is the best way to reduce both our waste and our carbon footprint. This is why our party kits offer such a practical alternative to single-use plastics.
If you're not based in England, has your country / state already banned these items?
What do you think the impact has been?
