This is me celebrating my 6th birthday. It was the 1980s and Care Bears ruled. 🐻

As guests delved into their party bags, the Care Bear themed tableware was binned, destined for landfill.

Not much has changed - disposable tableware is just as prevalent now. Difficult to recycle, it can take years to breakdown.

The plastic tableware from my party is likely still in a landfill somewhere today and will be for a long time to come. 😳

Switching to reusables offers the most sustainable solution.

If used at least 10 times, a reusable plastic cup has a lower environmental impact than that of a disposable one. And as part of a party kit, cups will get used many many times more.

Party should be fun and for creating memories of dancing to Black Lace’s ‘Superman’(!).... not leaving waste for future generations.

TODAY a new ban on single-use plastic comes into force in England. It includes…

🚫 Single-use plastic plates, bowls and trays
🚫 Single-use plastic cutlery including knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks
🚫 Plastic balloon sticks
🚫 Polystyrene cups and containers

This is similar to bans already in place in Scotland, the EU and many other countries and states around the world.

The positive impacts of similar bans have been seen quickly (after the plastic-stemmed cotton bud ban, the numbers found on UK beaches dropped by more than half) so this ban is to be celebrated. However I can’t help feeling that we aren’t taking full advantage of this opportunity to make change.

The ban doesn’t include plastic cups or single-use items made from mixed materials, like paper plates. There are also some exceptions such as plastic trays or bowls used in pre-packaged food, which will undoubtedly lead to confusion.

A BBC report on Friday highlighted that many businesses are unaware of the new ban and wholesalers still have stock of items which are now banned.

And I fear that simply banning plastic isn’t enough to cause the shift we need away from our dependency on single-use.

Single-use plastic-free alternatives cost businesses more money and likely have a higher carbon footprint (it takes more than four times as much energy to manufacture a paper bag than a plastic one). It also doesn’t do anything to tackle our waste crisis.

We need to support more businesses to switch to reusables. Via Upstream, I’ve seen the results of some great pilots in the US to support businesses and universities to make this change. We need to be doing more of this.

290,506 items!

We've just finished our annual impact audit. This is where we count up the total number of single-use items avoided by our party kits.

For this year (Aug 2022 to July 2023) we have logged a whopping 290k items 🥳

That's 290k single-use items which haven't been bought and binned because people switched to reusable tableware and borrowed a party kit.

Since we started tracking our impact in 2020 we've now logged over 686,000 single-use items avoided by party kits.

In October England will get new legislation banning more single-use plastic items. This follows existing bans on microbeads in beauty products, plastic straws, plastic-stemmed cotton buds and more.

The ban will include:
🚫 Single-use plastic plates, bowls and trays
🚫 Single-use plastic cutlery including knives, forks, spoons, sporks and chopsticks
🚫 Plastic balloon sticks
🚫 Polystyrene cups and containers

This is similar to bans already in place in Scotland, the EU and many other countries and states around the world.

Interestingly the ban in England will also include single-use items made from bioplastics. These are plastics made from an organic source like corn starch and sugar cane rather than oil.

One of the alternatives is to switch to single-use items made from a natural material like wood, paper, cardboard, bamboo and even palm leaves. These will breakdown after use much more quickly than plastics, and don't leave behind any nasty toxins. Retailers and food outlets are already starting to switch to these.

However switching to reusables wherever possible is the best way to reduce both our waste and our carbon footprint. This is why our party kits offer such a practical alternative to single-use plastics.

If you're not based in England, has your country / state already banned these items?
What do you think the impact has been?

There's more extensive blog post explaining the new ban in England over on our blog...

We can’t say it better!

Why is sharing SOOOO good? 🤔

In a circular economy items are designed to be frequently reused. This is good because…

💚 we can cut down on waste
💚 we reduce demand for new resources
💚 we can support the local economy

Party kits as based on a sharing model. The resources in our party kits (i.e. the reusable tableware and decorations) are shared within the local community.

This helps to…

💚 Save space as we’re not all storing something only used for the occasional party
💚 Get the most out of the resources used to make products as the equipment in party kits is used many (many!) times during its lifetime
💚 support local businesses, schools, community projects and charities with the income from hires
