When you're dealing with 32 pieces of tubular steel, it's real easy to get mixed up. I've learned to mark the steel as I go with a symbol to keep track of what part of the number frame they will end up.

Starting a new batch of numbers tonight! Making a batch of 8s this time. When the metal comes from the steel mill, it is covered with a black grease to keep it from rusting. First thing I have to do is get all that grease off before I can start grinding off the mill scale underneath. 1st step is the grossest!

I built a new fume extractor setup to suck the dangerous fumes away from the welding. I put it on a swing arm and it's very convenient. I try my best to keep everything safe.

My balloon frames start out as a stack of 12-foot long half-inch square tubing that has to be cleaned, cut, bent, and welded.

I drill out the base pipes before welding them to the balloon frames. Small defects in the pipe manufacturing can make the number frame not slide smoothly over your base plate posts. It's small steps like this that really make a difference.

Flux Core is a great way to get a strong plug weld. Even though I have switched my shop to TIG, I still like to do the plug welds with Flux Core.

How I stay organized when TIG welding. Red container is contaminated tungsten, black is freshly ground and cleaned. Yes, I use MIG piers all the dang time when TIG welding.
