What does "Enjoy yourself!" really mean?
Let’s talk about a phrase we are all likely to hear at least once in the coming weeks…Enjoy Yourself!
Usually when someone says this what they mean, and what we receive is, to enjoy the thing we just said we are going to do. When we tell someone we are going to a party, they might very likely say “Enjoy yourself”
We might take that to mean enjoy the party, enjoy the food, enjoy the open bar….but is that really what Enjoy Yourself means?
If we break it down we get…enjoy…yourself.
Yourself!
The phrase Enjoy Yourself means just that doesn’t it? Enjoy YOURSELF! Not enjoy the party, the food, the open bar…but YOURSELF.
The phrase literally means enjoy YOU…enjoy who you are in that moment, enjoy who you are becoming in that moment, enjoy YOU while you are at the party, while eating the food and the open bar, and meeting new people, having conversations, creating new relationships…
Enjoy the life you are living and who you are as you live it, and make memories. Making memories requires…remembering.
This does take some mindfulness – we get so caught up in the hustle and bustle at this time of year that we often run on auto-pilot never giving much thought to what we are doing as we run from one event to the next.
So my challenge to you over the next few weeks – especially - is to notice yourself when you are out celebrating, or with friends and family at home, or even during those quite moments – notice yourself. Enjoy yourself in those moments, enjoy who you are, enjoy who you are becoming, and be mindful of being in the moment. Notice how you feel, notice the conversations that make you stop and think, notice who you are becoming through every experience.
If you feel called, please let me know in the comments how that feels and what you noticed. I thank you for spending some time with me today, it means so much that you would take a few minutes with me.
Until next time, have a magical day and dont forget to enjoy you
