This activity assists children in the development of their senses. They develop their sense of touch by feeling the texture of the paper. They enhance their auditory senses through the sound the paper makes once grasped in their palms. Visual senses are fostered through viewing different colours, shapes and forms.

Fine motor skill development
While children are busy rolling, poking and squishing dough, they are building strength in the little muscles in their fingers and hands. These same muscles are used for later skills such as cutting and holding a pencil with a pincer grasp.

Children are also learning hand-eye coordination as they use their hands to shape play dough. Each different way children shape play dough—pushing, pulling, squashing, squeezing, rolling, chopping, cutting—builds fine motor development in a different way.

Fine motor activities like this get babies and toddlers little hands and fingers working. By the age of one most babies should be able to use the pincer grasp to pick things up, so this is a great activity to work on that skill.

Your child possibly already loves music and has favourite songs, like most pre-schoolers. This may have happened with little encouragement from you beyond simply playing music on long car trips.

It is in the first three years of life that a child is forming the brain connections that will lay the foundation for the speech/language, motor, and cognitive skills they will use for years to come. Musical experiences are an important way to help young children create these pathways, also called neural connections.

Not only is music a success-oriented and engaging means of addressing these skill areas, but music also drives neuroplasticity by pairing non-musical skills with music. This engages multiple systems of the brain in synchrony and fosters communication between both hemispheres.

And while listening to music is certainly key to creating them, it’s when kids actively participate in music that they make the strongest connections. A study found that musical experiences in childhood can actually accelerate brain development, particularly in the areas of language acquisition and reading skills, learning to play an instrument can improve mathematical learning and even increase SAT scores.
