Finally took a minute to think about my favorite albums and concerts of 2021.

1. Bartees Strange – Live Forever
Fast, loud indie rock that incorporates hip-hop style lyrics in an innovative way. Plus it has a song about the best member of Destiny’s Child, Actually came out in late 2020 but whatever.
2. Matt Berry – The Blue Elephant
Star of What We Do in the Shadows uses his pandemic break to create the best 60s pastiche since the Dukes of Stratosphere
3. Villagers – Fever Dreams
It took a bit to sink in, but now I have a different favorite song on this album every time I hear it.
4. Elvis Costello & the Attractions w/various – Spanish Model
Using the original album tracks, Costello remakes his 1978 album entirely in Spanish with a variety of vocalists.
5. Leon Bridges – Gold-Diggers Sound
Guests like Robert Glasper bring his sound to the next level.
6. Paul McCartney – McCartney III Imagined
Beck, Saint Vincent, Khraungbin and others remake and remodel Paul’s latest album.
7. EEP – Winter Skin
Shoegaze band from El Paso’s second LP. They just keep getting better.
8. Garrett T. Capps – I Love San Antone
Has a great Jethro Tull cover and I don’t even like Jethro Tull. Based on the live stuff I’ve heard I can’t wait for his next album.
9. Moby – Reprise
What can I say? I love a good greatest hits with an orchestra concept album.
10. Lunar Vacation – Inside Every Fig is a Dead Wasp
Indie Rock good enough to get me to leave the house in the midst of a pandemic. Playing Empire in Austin on the 15th.

Reissues:
John Coltrane – A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle
Undiscovered for 55 years, only the second known live recording of A Love Supreme.
David Bowie – Brilliant Adventure (1992-2001)
Far from the greatest period in Bowie’s career, but there are some gems to be discovered over the course of these 8 albums.
The Beatles – Let it Be (Deluxe Edition)
Frequently bootlegged material from this obscure Merseybeat band gets an official release.

Live Music took a hit this year, but I did get out a bit.
Khraungbin – Tobin Center, San Antonio was the best of the 3 times I saw them in 2021.
Robert Glasper – City Winery, Nashville
Phoebe Bridgers – Stubbs, Austin if just for the energy of the crowd.
Manchester Folk Festival - always great to see music in a new city.
Lone Star Shindig – Bobby Hotel, Nashville (actually helped produce this one, but it WAS damn near perfect).
