Greetings ladies and gentlemen.
African kings presents Nicky Shange

While featured by the group Shana at the Bat Centre, she was spotted by the late legend Mam Busi Mhlongo who was in attendance. Mhlongo was so impressed and asked the young student who was studying music at Natal Technikon if she was willing to work with her as a backing vocalist, an offer she definitely could not refuse. In 2001, she moved to Johannesburg where she became part of Joyous Celebration. After leaving Joyous Celebration, she became a backing vocalist for Thandiswa Mazwai, Malaika and Jaziel Brothers, to mention but a few. Later she was noticed by Jonas

Gwangwa whom she travelled with extensively. Some of the countries she has performed in include Namibia, Benin, Mozambique, Swaziland, Algeria, Mauritius, Germany and the Unites States. She has also worked with Themba Mkhize and Sibongile Khumalo.

As part of embarking on a solo career, she moved back to Durban in 2015. She has had several live performances in and around Durban, to the delight of audiences. Nicky has been writing songs since 1993. She refuses to be boxed into a specific genre because of her versatility. African rhythms, soulful sounds, and jazz are some of the music genres she infuses.

In 2016, Nicky was the lead singer in a project called Forest Jam Orchestra. The project consisted of musicians from Switzerland, Mozambique and South Africa. The group performed live at Kaya FM and toured South Africa and neighbouring countries. Recently, she performed songs by her late mentor Mam Busi Mhlongo in a live broadcast on Ukhozi FM which honoured fallen South African music icons. One of her immediate goals include recording a live album, which her fans will get to know her as a solo artist. Performing live is one of the things that give her the greatest satisfaction as an artist.

African kings presents Jazz in the right city.
Make sure you don't miss out

Sibusiso Zondi was born in Pietermaritzburg at Edendale Hospital in a Christian family with his father being the pastor and a leader of a church. This is the background that gave Sibusiso his strong musical sense. As a child surrounded with music Sibusiso was always singing, dancing and mock playing musical instruments until his father bought him a guitar. This gesture, from his dad, became a defining moment because Sbusiso started taking music seriously. He started to organize musical concerts at high school and also got invited to play at different local churches.

Sbu, as he is affectionately known, decided to enrol at what is now known as the Durban University of Technology to study towards a Diploma in Jazz and Popular Music, with a piano major. His music department was then moved from the DUT to the University of KwaZulu Natal where he continued to pursue his diploma. He had already fallen in love with all musical instruments and he now decided to change his major from piano to major in drum. This proved to his very best decision as a plethora of doors opened for him as a drummer. Sbu quickly made a name for himself as a musician and started to gain much needed accolades, respect and recognition from musicians and enthusiasts alike. Some of his achievements include:-  2005 – He started playing for international artists like, mama Busi Mhlongo; Dr. Brian Thusi; Swazi Dlamini; Ernie Smith and Tshepo Mngoma.
 2005 - He co-directed music for a theatre production, Romeo and Juliet, which was produced by the Eager Artists Production Company as a school’s set work to assist Matric learners to better understand this William Shakespeare’s drama
2006 - He won the Best Musician award at the Sun Coast Casino talent search competition 2007 – He won the Best Drummer award at the Standard Bank Youth Festival, a wing of the internationally rated National Arts Festival which is held in Grahamstown yearly.
2008 – He won the Best Drummer award at the Standard Bank Youth Festival, now a second in a row – this was a feat rarely achieved by any other musician before him to win a back to back. This afforded him an opportunity to tour nationally and abroad with different artists as well as with the youth band which comprised of winners of all different instruments at the festival.
2015 - He founded and continues to run a fast growing music production studio and record label, Nuborn Music Network which is based in Durban. It is refreshing to see such an accomplished musician who is down to earth. Sbu continues to share all that he has learnt over the years with aspiring musician as a facilitator at the BAT Centre.

HE HAS PERFORMED WITH: Mama Busi Mhlongo, Dr Brian Thusi,Swazi Dlamini ,Tshepo Mngoma ,Afrotainment, Manhattans, Bheki Khoza,Mbuso Khoza,Andew Lily,ManHatten,Zakes Bantwini,Niel Gonsalves,Hlengiwe Mhlaba,Sfiso Ncwane Xolisa Dlamini,Zoe “The Seed”,Masuku, Nicky Shange,Philani Ngidi and many more

21/03/2023

South African saxophonist Karen Devroop has released his 4th studio
album as a soloist. While Devroop has several live and studio
recordings as a sideman, this is his 4th outing as a soloist leading his
own ensemble.
Deviating from his previous 2020 release which was more
contemporary jazz, this album takes him back to his traditional jazz
roots in the quartet format. The album features a superb list of
artists including Hans Vroomans on piano (Metropole Jazz Orkestra
and Amsterdam Conservatory of Music), Europe’s legendary jazz
bassist Hein van de Geyn who has toured and recorded with iconic artists such as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz,
Dee Dee Bridgewater, John Abercrombie and many others and rounding off the quartet is South Africa’s
leading drum kit player Kevin Gibson who needs little introduction due to this sheer volume of
recordings and performances with national and international artists.
Karen has been busy in the last few years with 2 CD recordings, producing singles for artists such as
Avi2.Oh and recording on albums such as Florida based Latin jazz vocalist Jose Michel. In addition to his
studio work he has performed extensively at festivals and as jazz soloist with orchestras in the US,
Vienna, Italy, France and Netherlands.
This album entitled Dance of the Indentured features the quartet performing 11 original compositions
composed by Karen. The works are uniquely South African and firmly embedded in the South African
jazz idiom with Mbaqanga and Goema rhythms over modern jazz harmonies. Each of the works has been
arranged to showcase the talents of each of the artists on the recording.

Linda Sikhakhane’s SA/Swiss Celebration Group stems from his latest album release
‘Isambulo’. This collaboration was realised when Sikhakhane was ‘Artist In Residency’ in
Switzerland under Pro Helvetia’s program back in 2021, where he explored the notions of
revelation in the midst of uncertainty and what it means for sound to be a vehicle that
enables us to travel beyond our human imagination.
“Revelation through sounds is a disclosure of sacred realities and a continuous process for
discovery”. This tour serves as a celebration pursuit as they reflect on some of the findings
and gifts the sound has brought to the fore. Recently named the Standard Bank Young Artist
for Jazz, Sikhakhane kickstarts the year with a stellar line up featuring Swiss musicians;
Lucca Fries(piano) , Jonas Ruther(drums), French bassist Géraud Portal, South African
vocalist and oldtime friend Paras.

Nosihe Zulu

The vocalist has organically grown in her artistic expressions to be an eclectic soulful power force, solidly centred in her environment to interpret and translate through songs and its imagery. Some may liken Nosihe’s bold deposition in imaging to avant-garde styling of Grace Jones combined with the modern day haunting melodies of Laura Mvula. One can describe her sound as soulful and emotive, her songs are flamboyant and filled with her vibrant persona. She is drawing from classical, jazz and gospel tapestry of rhythms. This artist is known for always looking for collaborations with other artforms, such as fashion, photography and design.
