Greetings ladies and gentlemen.
African kings presents Nicky Shange

While featured by the group Shana at the Bat Centre, she was spotted by the late legend Mam Busi Mhlongo who was in attendance. Mhlongo was so impressed and asked the young student who was studying music at Natal Technikon if she was willing to work with her as a backing vocalist, an offer she definitely could not refuse. In 2001, she moved to Johannesburg where she became part of Joyous Celebration. After leaving Joyous Celebration, she became a backing vocalist for Thandiswa Mazwai, Malaika and Jaziel Brothers, to mention but a few. Later she was noticed by Jonas

Gwangwa whom she travelled with extensively. Some of the countries she has performed in include Namibia, Benin, Mozambique, Swaziland, Algeria, Mauritius, Germany and the Unites States. She has also worked with Themba Mkhize and Sibongile Khumalo.

As part of embarking on a solo career, she moved back to Durban in 2015. She has had several live performances in and around Durban, to the delight of audiences. Nicky has been writing songs since 1993. She refuses to be boxed into a specific genre because of her versatility. African rhythms, soulful sounds, and jazz are some of the music genres she infuses.

In 2016, Nicky was the lead singer in a project called Forest Jam Orchestra. The project consisted of musicians from Switzerland, Mozambique and South Africa. The group performed live at Kaya FM and toured South Africa and neighbouring countries. Recently, she performed songs by her late mentor Mam Busi Mhlongo in a live broadcast on Ukhozi FM which honoured fallen South African music icons. One of her immediate goals include recording a live album, which her fans will get to know her as a solo artist. Performing live is one of the things that give her the greatest satisfaction as an artist.

" For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others " Nelson Mandela

In the spirit of Freedom, wrap up your Freedom day with us while reflecting on the freedom of expression through song.

Professor Salim Washington is a master tenor saxophonist, composer, and jazz educator. As a multi-reedsman, he plays in addition to the sax: the oboe, bass clarinet, and flutes. Originating from Memphis Tennessee, in the USA, Salim Washington is now based in South Africa, where he teaches at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, in Durban.

Salim's musical background is grounded in jazz as well as in the other African American vernacular musics. Nevertheless, his performance practices embrace the avant garde and the experimental aspect of the African American musical heritage. As an instrumentalist and composer, he has recorded and performed in clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Cuba, South Africa, Mozambique, and various countries in Europe

Finally, it is worth to mention that Salim Washington is the inaugural International Visiting Professor of African American and African Diasporic Studies, at Columbia University.

African kings presents Jazz in the right city.
Make sure you don't miss out

Sibusiso Zondi was born in Pietermaritzburg at Edendale Hospital in a Christian family with his father being the pastor and a leader of a church. This is the background that gave Sibusiso his strong musical sense. As a child surrounded with music Sibusiso was always singing, dancing and mock playing musical instruments until his father bought him a guitar. This gesture, from his dad, became a defining moment because Sbusiso started taking music seriously. He started to organize musical concerts at high school and also got invited to play at different local churches.

Sbu, as he is affectionately known, decided to enrol at what is now known as the Durban University of Technology to study towards a Diploma in Jazz and Popular Music, with a piano major. His music department was then moved from the DUT to the University of KwaZulu Natal where he continued to pursue his diploma. He had already fallen in love with all musical instruments and he now decided to change his major from piano to major in drum. This proved to his very best decision as a plethora of doors opened for him as a drummer. Sbu quickly made a name for himself as a musician and started to gain much needed accolades, respect and recognition from musicians and enthusiasts alike. Some of his achievements include:-  2005 – He started playing for international artists like, mama Busi Mhlongo; Dr. Brian Thusi; Swazi Dlamini; Ernie Smith and Tshepo Mngoma.
 2005 - He co-directed music for a theatre production, Romeo and Juliet, which was produced by the Eager Artists Production Company as a school’s set work to assist Matric learners to better understand this William Shakespeare’s drama
2006 - He won the Best Musician award at the Sun Coast Casino talent search competition 2007 – He won the Best Drummer award at the Standard Bank Youth Festival, a wing of the internationally rated National Arts Festival which is held in Grahamstown yearly.
2008 – He won the Best Drummer award at the Standard Bank Youth Festival, now a second in a row – this was a feat rarely achieved by any other musician before him to win a back to back. This afforded him an opportunity to tour nationally and abroad with different artists as well as with the youth band which comprised of winners of all different instruments at the festival.
2015 - He founded and continues to run a fast growing music production studio and record label, Nuborn Music Network which is based in Durban. It is refreshing to see such an accomplished musician who is down to earth. Sbu continues to share all that he has learnt over the years with aspiring musician as a facilitator at the BAT Centre.

HE HAS PERFORMED WITH: Mama Busi Mhlongo, Dr Brian Thusi,Swazi Dlamini ,Tshepo Mngoma ,Afrotainment, Manhattans, Bheki Khoza,Mbuso Khoza,Andew Lily,ManHatten,Zakes Bantwini,Niel Gonsalves,Hlengiwe Mhlaba,Sfiso Ncwane Xolisa Dlamini,Zoe “The Seed”,Masuku, Nicky Shange,Philani Ngidi and many more
