African kings presents Jazz in the right city.
Make sure you don't miss out
Sibusiso Zondi was born in Pietermaritzburg at Edendale Hospital in a Christian family with his father being the pastor and a leader of a church. This is the background that gave Sibusiso his strong musical sense. As a child surrounded with music Sibusiso was always singing, dancing and mock playing musical instruments until his father bought him a guitar. This gesture, from his dad, became a defining moment because Sbusiso started taking music seriously. He started to organize musical concerts at high school and also got invited to play at different local churches.
Sbu, as he is affectionately known, decided to enrol at what is now known as the Durban University of Technology to study towards a Diploma in Jazz and Popular Music, with a piano major. His music department was then moved from the DUT to the University of KwaZulu Natal where he continued to pursue his diploma. He had already fallen in love with all musical instruments and he now decided to change his major from piano to major in drum. This proved to his very best decision as a plethora of doors opened for him as a drummer. Sbu quickly made a name for himself as a musician and started to gain much needed accolades, respect and recognition from musicians and enthusiasts alike. Some of his achievements include:- 2005 – He started playing for international artists like, mama Busi Mhlongo; Dr. Brian Thusi; Swazi Dlamini; Ernie Smith and Tshepo Mngoma.
2005 - He co-directed music for a theatre production, Romeo and Juliet, which was produced by the Eager Artists Production Company as a school’s set work to assist Matric learners to better understand this William Shakespeare’s drama
2006 - He won the Best Musician award at the Sun Coast Casino talent search competition 2007 – He won the Best Drummer award at the Standard Bank Youth Festival, a wing of the internationally rated National Arts Festival which is held in Grahamstown yearly.
2008 – He won the Best Drummer award at the Standard Bank Youth Festival, now a second in a row – this was a feat rarely achieved by any other musician before him to win a back to back. This afforded him an opportunity to tour nationally and abroad with different artists as well as with the youth band which comprised of winners of all different instruments at the festival.
2015 - He founded and continues to run a fast growing music production studio and record label, Nuborn Music Network which is based in Durban. It is refreshing to see such an accomplished musician who is down to earth. Sbu continues to share all that he has learnt over the years with aspiring musician as a facilitator at the BAT Centre.
