I love seeing the history of records reflected on the labels. I mean the history of that individual copy. I like seeing those charity return address labels on them from whoever owned them years ago. I google map them to see where the record used to live. Sometimes it's a home or apartment building that would have already been old in the 1960s, or what would have been a brand-new fashionable suburban ranch home, or now it's a vacant lot, or the address doesn't even exist anymore, the street renamed or swallowed up into a large redevelopment.
I love seeing radio station call letters stamped or written, the big X written on the side that should be played (sometimes I disagree).
This beautiful promo copy of this Otis Redding classic I just added to my collection was obtained by Indianapolis DJ Bill Rucker on July 10, 1968, and from its condition that might have been yesterday!

Turns out, it's a rare soul dancer out of Tyler, Texas, by a guy called Rayford Tucker. It came out on the Sandpiper label, but this copy was pressed up first to make sure it sounded right on vinyl.

I picked up this well-worn Rhythm & Blues classic at an estate sale this week, and when I got it cleaned up and was playing it, my wife came into the room with a giant smile of recognition on her face, saying "this is in Cry-Baby!"
That's right, had Rachel Sweet sing "Please, Mr. Jailer" for the film, but this is the 1956 original, by the song's writer Wynona Carr.

A few finds from a quick estate sale visit. I got to the 45s first this time, but I had to work around about a dozen guys in the corner of the basement stripping the LP heaps bare. Nobody but me looked at the 45s, and a few of them wondered why anyone would want those.

Nothing amazing to be found, but I like that Bloos Magoos (the original press before they changed the spelling to Blues Magoos). There's a couple of doubles of Louisville records there, too, for trades.

It was worth my time, plus I stopped for donuts!
