Join us this Friday (5th May from 4pm) at the Newcastle Deaf Centre for a special event during Deaf Awareness Week, where we'll be celebrating the deaf community in Newcastle and the diversity of cultures through the universal language of food! These secret recipes have been refined by generations, and we're excited to have Agnes, a talented cook from a multi-cultural household with Caribbean and Nigerian roots, sharing her love for food with the community.
Agnes grew up watching her grandmother cook and learned to make authentic Caribbean jerk chicken, curry goat, and popular African jollof rice. These recipes have been passed down through her family for generations. Jerk chicken is a spicy, flavorful chicken dish marinated with Jamaican jerk seasoning, while curry goat is a spicy meat stew made with goat meat, and jollof rice is a one-pot rice dish made with tomato sauce, spices, and vegetables.
Agnes used to own a Caribbean restaurant in Central Newcastle and is now partly retired, but we invite her back and she will be using our platform as a freelancer to share her love for cooking with the community. She can't wait to serve up her signature dishes and transport your taste buds to the Caribbean and Africa!
So come on down and experience the flavors of the Caribbean and Africa. Let's eat, enjoy, and celebrate cultural diversity through food! See you there!
Meet Merelize, our next talented cook who will be sharing culinary skills and love for Namibian and South African cuisine!
Merelize will be making chicken sosaties, which are marinated skewers of meat, cheesy garlic pap bolltjies, which are small bread rolls filled with garlic and cheese, and chakalaka salad, a spicy vegetable relish that is a popular side dish in South Africa.
Merelize grown up from Namibia and South Africa, where the gastronomy is predominantly centered around meat. She shared with us that in Namibia, there is an endless variety of meats available, including ostrich, antelope, zebra, giraffe, oryx, kudu, lamb, and beef. The meat is usually grilled and served with rich and flavorful sauces.
The cuisine in both Namibia and South Africa has been influenced by various cultures, including Dutch, French, Indian, and Malaysian flavors and techniques. These influences continue to shape the menus of restaurants and the meals prepared in homes all over the country.
