Stay safe out there guys ❤️🌿

We’d also like to use this opportunity to express the importance of supporting local independent businesses and the events industry in a time like this. If there is anything you can do, whether it be purchasing gift vouchers to use at a later date, buying tickets in advance, getting takeaways from independents or donating to any crowdfunders that may pop up, it all helps. This is a desperate time for many of them and we must do all we can to keep these places at the heart of Sheffield culture 💛

- Penny Withers Ceramics 🌿
Sheffield-based ceramicist, Penny Withers has a unique style of combining function and beauty, she use glazes to create stunning landscapes within her ceramics which are only revealed after the firing process, almost like a science experiment. Other pieces explore shapes and balance and through imperfect symmetry evoke a sense of harmony and reflection of the space around us. In her own words, “The wet clay flows through my hands like a river. A single thought is enough to interrupt the stream and cause ripples.”
In January she exhibited ‘Scale’, a collection of monoliths at the Yorkshire Artspace inspired by the Peak District, particularly the dramatic rocky outcrops at Stannage and Curbar Edge, and the local climbers that regularly come face-to-face with these natural formations. If you’ve ever been out to the Peaks you’ll be able to identify the shapes, colours and details that are so unique to this part of the country in Wither’s work.

Meet Phoebe! Our Marketing, Sales & Sponsorship Manager 🌿

“I’ve always loved getting involved with anything creative, attending drama groups when I was younger really brought me out of my shell and reassured me that I wanted to spend my life surrounded by people who loved the arts as much as I did. As I grew up, I got more and more into music and the culture that surrounds it, leading me into my dream placement opportunity at Yellow Arch Studios where I helped out with everything from scrubbing toilets to making set props to marketing & promotions. I learnt so much about the importance of the creative industries and just how fragile that world is, in this political age we see too many independent venues and arts centres being pushed to the way-side and it’s time they received the acknowledgement they deserve since the community they help build is invaluable to us all”

Meet Cerise! Our Finance & Administration Manager 🌿
“If I hadn’t discovered performing arts when I was around ten years old I wouldn’t be who I am today. It’s an extremely cliche statement but there’s so much truth behind it. Having the opportunity to sing, dance and make people laugh in acting classes helped me find who I wanted to become. The best part of being in a theatre production is the buzz you have with all your cast-mates because together you share an experience that is intense, exhilarating but so much fun. I will always be singing (work friends you know this is true) and I will always be a little extra with my story-telling. The one thing I have learned is that when you’re picking up a new creative hobby do it for you and have fun! My latest hobby is playing the guitar, you never know when that will come in handy!”

Meet Sophie! Our Event Operations and Health & Safety Manager 🌿
“I have grown up with the arts, people that know me, will know I have a flair for the dramatics (oops). But honestly, without the arts, I wouldn’t be the same person. Dance has always been an escape for me and I have danced for as long as I can remember and very recently just got back into it here in Sheffield and loving every single minute. I’ve always been involved with performance; I find myself getting lost in it all and am always drawn towards anything in that sector. Throughout school the arts were so important in getting me through my day-to-day and it’s always the best memories I have from education, which is one of the main reasons I feel so strongly about having access to arts, especially through childhood.” -

- Katie Paterson 🌿
Currently on display at the Millenium Gallery you will find the incredible and immersive ‘Totality’ (2016) - comprised of over 10,000 images of solar eclipses dating as far back as the 19th century. Paterson has a deep interest in the universe and our connection with time and the cosmos, she works with scientists and researchers from across the world to bring together her ideas and invoke an ‘intimate, poetic and philosophical’ response from people who engage with her work. See also one of her more recent pieces in the comments, ‘The Cosmic Spectrum’, which brings together the average colours of the Universe perceived by the human eye collected from scientific data in one spectrum which spins continuously. Critics have described the feeling you get when engaging with her work as “ontological vertigo” - would you agree?
