It's Rasam Weather out here, and this is exactly how I have the tangy spicy broth 🥰

In a tumbler with rice, Milagai Podi, and a dollop of Ghee ❤️

It's a pretty rustic image, but I truly wanted to strip the presentation down to the basics, and capture the food in it's authentic form, with no gimmicks involved.

This simple yet flavorsome broth represents my summer holidays as a little kid at my Nani's home.

As she was based in Yercaud, our meals mostly revolved around South Indian delicacies, and rasam was a constant across all lunches. Towards the end of the meal, she would put 2 spoons of rice on my plate, and pour some rasam on to it. She would then mix them together with little Milagai Podi and make a cute rice ball in her palm. In a playful manner, she would then feed me that flavourful rice ball and off I'd go running to wash my hands and play outside. It became the highlight of my meals eventually 😊

Sometimes I find myself feeling like a little girl wishing for her Nani to feed her rasam rice. ❤️

Infused with subtle notes of rose and saffron, this Sheera is my go to comfort food for when I wish for something light, fluffy, and mildly sweet.

One for the Summer - Mango & Chocolate Swirl Tea Cake with Kiwi Toppings 😋

Lately I've been relishing the last batch of this season's mangoes. So to savor them longer, I decided to add them to my cake, and voila few hours later I had myself a slice of this rustic chic tea cake topped with kiwi fruit.

They bitter sweet chocolate pairs with the fragrant sweetness of Mango so well!

Now all I've been doing is gorging on this slice of heaven while reading my book, as I lie in laziness on long summer afternoons.

Love it ❤️❤️

Chilli Potato Chips 😋😋

Say hello to my Guilty Pleasure!

Everytime someone opens a bag of potato chips, the Lays Anthem starts playing in my head, and I instantly find myself grabbing one chip after the other till there's none left on the plate.

Overtime, I've been able to resist the temptation by ensuring that there are no potato chips present in my house ever! But once in a blue moon I do allow myself to savor the taste of some homemade Potato Chips seasoned with chilli, salt and turmeric. Exactly how mom used to make when we were growing up 😊

I remember she would slice the potatoes into wafer thin pieces and dab them dry!

Once the oil in the wok is super hot, she'd throw the slices in and voila, out came crispy Potato chips waiting to be seasoned and devoured instantly.

She would also sundry some potato slices and save them for later!

Tomato Soup but make it EXTRA!

Talking of rain yesterday got me thinking about Tomato Soup! How you say?

Well, growing up when we would travel all the way to Salem from Jamshedpur via. train, we'd often encounter rain along the way....
It used to be beautiful to watch the rain wash away all the dirt and dryness from the earth, farms, rivers and trees, as we moved along...

I'd witness fresh greenery of the countryside pass by me in merriment. It was during this time, that the Pantry would provide tomato soup with bread sticks to passengers, alongside other rain worthy snacks.

It would be a simple cup of no frills tomato soup. Yet I would enjoy it, whole heartedly as at that moment, it offered a feeling of soothing warmth to both, my throat and my soul all at once.

So to cherish my summer train rides as a child, I decided to make the tomato soup but own it with some robust flavors that makes it punchy and ready for the rain!

One for the Rains - Gobi 65

As much as I love a beautiful sunny day, occasionally I also find myself running to the balcony and enjoying the rain as it pours down around me.

There's something truly nostalgic about the grey clouds floating by and bringing in rainfall. Takes you straight home with the sweet smell of earth.

Growing up, my brother and I would run to the terrace when it rains, and just dance and play aimlessly, until our Mom would shout and summon us downstairs. We would indulge in banter, and often spot rainbows together.

Once we head down and clean up, Mom would have made a batch ful of Gobi 65 with Coconut Chutney. We would sit together in our balcony and gobble them down with steaming cups of Lemon Tea..

We talked about random nothing's of the world and laugh together, as the rain poured down around us.

My kinda street food - Dosa!

Growing up, my family was extra fond of crispy buttery dosas served with a combination of spicy chutneys!

I remember how every Sunday morning, my brother and I would wait patiently for the IDLI DOSA WALA to come to our house.

We would know the Thela had entered our lane, when the guy would clink his ladle three times on his hot Iron Griddle.

It was a distinct sound that was followed by synchronized pestering of Mom for 5 Rupees, and heading straight out to our main gate with steel plates in our hands.

We would watch patiently as the guy would sprinkle water on the hot Tawa and wipe it swiftly with his muslin cloth. He would then pour a bowlful of batter and skillfully make a big wide circle of Dosa. It was followed by smearing of potato masala. I liked mine with extra onions and a dollop of butter.

Once done, He would gently place the Dosas in our plates and fill our tiny bowls with chutneys and sambar.

His Dosas had a golden hue, crackling crispness and the potatoes within were a confetti of flavours with spices, onions and butter.

I don't think I have ever had a better one than that ♥️

That's all it took back then and sometimes even now, to make Sunday joyful 😍

Chaas A.K.A Glassful of summer memories ❤️

Pictures are such strong mediums of expression. Some release emotions triggered by memories that we cherish and hold tightly within our hearts.

I love revisiting the days that have passed, and cherishing those little moments that could have been extremely ordinary at the time of their existence. Sometimes, i find it absolutely fascinating to have remembered something so ordinary from the past after all these years. Kudos to my mind for saving all those moments, so I could remember them, even after they were gone.

If you have memories that are invited by this glass of Chaas, and you would love to share, please enter them in the comments below.

Bhindi Sabzi 🤤

I woke up to grey skies and misty air, and my body craved for some warmth on my plate.

So I whipped up this soulful Bhindi Sabzi folded in mustard sauce.

Growing up, our kitchen garden used to be adorned with beautiful yellow Okra flowers during the summer. I always felt that they resembled Hibiscus flowers... The closely interwined delicate petals had a deep red ombre hue in the center, and a slender pistil with pollen on the top...

Over time the flowers would melt away and velvety soft Okras would take their place. I would closely watch their growth, and would be hyped with excitement on the day when mom and I would carry our wicker basket to the garden and pluck every Okra delicately one after the other..

She would then quickly wash, chop and toss the fresh Okras in the mustard gravy and our family would get to enjoy a hearty meal on a cozy summer afternoon.

PASTA 🤤

Summer's finally got kicking in Toronto with Patios popping open at every corner.

The one thing I've been looking forward to the most apart from sipping down bottomless glasses of cocktails; is a ravishing plate of fresh pasta straight out of the Chef's kitchen 🤤

So to celebrate the start of what hopefully will be a joyful summer, I whipped up a scrumptious plate of Pistachio Pesto Pasta.

It's nutty, hot, creamy and the mint in the pesto adds a refreshing zing to the entire dish. Sprinkled with garlic chips, fried Onions and Parmesan Cheese, it truly is a decadent delight.

Sweet & Sour Potato Curry in Mango and Cashew Sauce ..

There are so many ways in which this dish touches my soul.

It's sweet and sour flavor reminds me of the tantalizing taste of Mango Launji that mom used to make with raw mangoes.

The spiced potatoes and chunks of soft paneer folded in remind me of Railway waali Poori Sabzi served on the mornings of our Summer train journeys..

Its those very same emotions and flavours served in the face of this dish.

Aamras Puri 🥭

It ain't summer if you haven't slurped down a bowl of Aamras with some puffy Pooris.

When I was little, our first home had a mango tree in it's backyard, alongside a Guava tree.

Every spring it would blossom and the tree would be studded with ditsy little white flowers.. Sensing my adoration towards the tree, my Mom told me how in the coming months, some of these flowers would turn into big, juicy mangoes.

My little girl mind was blown by the possibility of a flower turning into a fruit! It seemed unimaginable. Yet somehow, true to my Mom's words, those flowers were soon replaced by tiny mangoes that grew into big juicy mangoes.

My Dad would pluck the fruits in batches every Sunday morning throughout the summer. During the peak of the season, Mom would make sweet Aamras for Sunday lunch and we would scoop it up with plenty pooris. ❤️☺️

And our summer was spent in perfect harmony enjoying the fruit of our backyard's mango tree.

Bell Pepper Pulao - Inspired by the colours of Summer! 🌼🌼

The sun's shining bright and I've been spending a lot of time outdoors, exploring the beautiful nature trails speckled across Toronto.

Along my path, nature accompanies me with it's gentle breeze, lush green trees, and a vibrant palette of fragrant summer flowers.

So inspired by the vibrant colours around me, I decided to make myself a bowl of Bell Pepper and Peas Pulao

It's warm, comforting and zesty!

Pulissery or Moru Curry ❤️

Introduced to me by my Mallu Boy's Mom, this dish is a slurrpy delight.

Don't fall for it's simple appearance, as this soupy soulfood is an absolute flavor bomb. Made from a blend of yogurt and freshly ground coconut, it is my go to dish for the scorching summer days.

My rendition of Pulissery also stars roasted coconut chips in the tempering, for that added bite and feel of coconut.

Just poured myself a generous helping on steamed rice and a bed of pickled cucumbers, and sprinkled my bowl with Papadam. And with that first bite, I was home!

Watch my Reel on Instagram to see how I enjoyed my bowl of Pulissery. 😊

Happy Mother's Day ♥️

It is needless to state how much this day means to me, even more so now that I don't have her to share it with....

It's not like I miss her less on other days, but certain events like her Birthday, our favorite festivals and Mother's Day, bring along with them a bittersweet feeling.

Sweet, as they are filled with beautiful memories of the time we spent together. And bitter with the fact that I would not be able to create new memories with her.

However, I now know that her love still surrounds me, guiding me and protecting me every step of the way, long after she's gone. And for that, I will forever be grateful for my Mom. Love you Ma ♥️

Woke up to the sunshine seeping through the curtains of my bedroom window, and as I lay under the sheets, I felt it's subtle warmth embracing me. ♥️

There's nothing more blissful to me than waking up to a beautiful morning with positive energy flowing around me. So to complement the soothing vibes, I made myself a fresh pot Blue Pea Flower Tea.

My favorite Kerala Breakfast - Kadala Curry with Puttu, Fried eggs, Papadam & Lemon Tea ♥️

There are few dishes that are golden when it comes to the ultimate breakfast platter, and this dish is my one of my top favorites.

Puttu - It is a steamed cake made from moist & seasoned rice flour and freshly grated coconut. Different households often switch rice flour with Ragi, whole wheat etc. based on their preference.

Kadala Curry - Made from Black Chickpeas folded into a gravy of shallots, tomato, ginger, garlic, select spices and coconut milk.

I was introduced to this delicacy by my husband who hails from Kerala.

On a fine morning on our first visit to his home, his Mother made Puttu and Kadala Curry for breakfast, served with steamed ripe bananas and some sugar on the side. Now I had never had my bananas steamed but when they showed me how to devour the dish, I must say I fell in love with the flavors. The dish is simply a symphony of flavours and textures.

It was in that moment and many others to follow, that I knew that Kerala will now be a place we call home! ♥️

Vegetable Medley in Mustard 🌼🌺

As nature turns a new leaf in Spring, I cannot help myself from imbibing it's spirit in my food.

Growing up, Mom would prep her garden for the season starting February. Seeds, stems and bulbs of all seasonal plants would be placed in the freshly prepared pots and kiyaris.

The outcome of her dedication, was a beautiful garden of flowers, herbs and other vegetables and fruits that would thrive all season long. We witnessed the marvel year after year, and throughly enjoyed the produce in all our meals, as a family.

I wish she was still around to tend to her gardens as seasons unfolded. It's the little moments like these that end up becoming cherishing memories of our beloved ones. ♥️

Super Tangy Tomato & Tamarind Rasam Vada ♥️
Sunny crispness is upon us with a slight chill in the air.

It's the kind of weather that demands something with a kick, but also not heavy on the palette. And so, to satiate my cravings, I decided to make a tangy-herby rasam with season's fresh tomatoes, and dunked super soft Vadas in them.

I find this dish to be so fulfilling. The soft Vadas soak in all the tangy goodness and melt in your mouth, leaving behind an explosion of rasam flavours. It's symphony to my taste buds 😍

Have you ever tried these? Let me know in Comments.

HOLI SPECIAL - Malpua & Aaloo Dum 🌈

There are very few food combinations that shoot you straight to heaven with just a bite, and this my friends is one!

Imagine biting into these spongy soft Pancake-ish Malpuas dripping with Saffron & Rose syrup, with an after bite of the rustic tangy & savory Aaloo Dum. It's a divine feeling that cannot be described to it's full glory 🤤

HOLI at home could never be complete without Malpuas. Those mornings always begun with the smell of hot Puas wafting in the air. It was the sweetest aroma. Excited and pumped, we would rush to freshen up, just get a quick bite of these sweet treats before we ventured outside with our Pichkaris and Water balloons to play with a riot of colours and often even mud 🙈 when our stash got over!! 😂

We would then return home starving, but before we enter, Mom would get the last laugh as she steered us into the backyard first to hose us down with the garden pipe to get all the dirt off before we even stepped inside.

Such were the fun-filled days of HOLI growing up 😊 The memories still warm my heart ♥️

I hope one day we could all return to a better time, when we can smear colours on to our loved one's faces without any fear! - Happy HOLI 😊

Phulki Ghugni Chaat ♥️

A LONG NOSTALGIC JOURNEY AWAITS! 😋

This soulful chaat is derived from one of my most cherished train journeys.
Growing up, most of our summer vacations used to be spent at my Nani's home (Maternal grandmother).

He cottage was perched atop a beautiful hill amidst a breathtaking coffee plantation in Yercaud, Tamil Nadu.

That place always felt like it was straight out an Enid Blyton's novel.

Now, the journey to the place though was a long one! We would board the Tata Alleppy Express on a hot summer afternoon and would spend 2 whole days in the train before we arrived at our destination. To me, those two days were totally fun-filled! Not only would I make new friends with whom I'd climb on berths and run around in the tightly packed AC Coach, but together, we would also gorge on all the yummy food that was sold at every Junction! One of those dishes happens to be Ghugni, that would be sold when our train would enter the state of Orissa.

A simple curry of yellow peas piled on with chutneys fresh radish, red onions, and a whole lot of dressing. I never thought it could taste so good! But it did, and I fell in love with it.

My Mom noticed how much I enjoyed it, and decided to recreate it at home with an added element of Phulkis. These are super fluffy & light fritters made from a blend of lentils that just soak in all the slurpy goodness of the Ghugni and make for the perfect companion to this beautiful dish ♥️

And that's how Phulki Ghugni Chaat was found.

If you happen to be in and around Toronto, I would love for you to try this! Just drop me a DM and I'll get in touch right away.

Bihari Chicken Lahsuni ♥️

This dish represents New Year celebrations to me!

I know it sounds like a weird thing to say, but there's a story behind it.

So growing up, our family alongside others from our neighborhood, would head out for a picnic on New Years day.

Every January 1st began with Mom shaking and waking us kids. Together, all the families would first drive to a countryside temple tucked in the hills. As a kid, I would be too grumpy and groggy from being woken up too early, to admire the beauty of the nature surrounding us, but the grown up me longs to visit the cute little temple tucked in the hills.

Once the prayers were over, our entourage will then head to a picturesque location somewhere in the wilderness, where all the Dads would get together to prepare the lunch that featured our famous Chicken Curry.

It was on this day alone that I observed my Mom being lazy and just enjoying the company of her friends without worrying about food or other chores. It was refreshing to see that. If just for 24 hours, the shackles of patriarchy would just melt away and all the Moms got to ease out and enjoy life and the nature that surrounded them.

As a kid, I despised these picnics as it forced me to interact with kids of other families, who btw were a mean bunch😑

However, just watching Mom have a good time for a change, made it worth tolerating those annoying creatures.
♥️
And that is why I included this dish in my Launch menu, as it represents happiness, love and great taste!
