Smoked a small pork loin after work. Sliced her thin. Constructed a sando with deli ham, Duke’s Mayo, sliced Grillo’s Dills, Swiss cheese, and the pork loin. Cooked it “grilled cheese style” in a frying pan. Turned into a pretty dang good poor man’s Cubano.

Just a bunch of old fly fishing bums, that’s all. Sharing stories about the guy who brought us all together a handful of years ago. Chatting about his larger-than-life presence, his influence on us and the culture in general, CL Smooths in the morning, and his acute balance of simultaneously trash-talking your weak game and picking you up and having your back in the same breath. Tanner pushed me to barbecue more, to follow my passion. His “f**k it, let’s do it” attitude coincided with mine, and encouraged me to follow what I was passionate about. If there’s one regret that I have, it’s that my piece of s**t phone lost all of his encouraging texts. But they’ll always be there in the ol brain, and I’ll always know that he was a helluva brother in the short time we had together. So good to see all these guys again, and looking forward to some fishing and BBQing soon. Gonna miss you, man.

Smoked meats, cold beer, and different folks from all around came together in the driveway to raise money for Vic and his (our) family! Thanks so much for donating and hanging out—You guys absolutely rule. Sara said this morning that Victor loved seeing everyone yesterday. It really meant a lot. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

Driveway Q for Victor Bencomo this Saturday (Aug 17) 4pm-6pm. I’ll make some ribs, some pulled pork of some variety, and pork belly pinwheels. Possibly something else to break up the pork monotony, but don’t hold your breath.

This sketch of Vic is a poor representation of him, as he is handsome as all get-out, and not at all weird looking and bulgy. But I only had a 10min break, so this is what you get.

If you are interested in attending but unsure where it’s taking place, message me. If you’d like your own slab(s) of ribs, holler. Otherwise I’ll just be cooking a buttload of food and you folks can graze at your convenience. To-go boxes will be available if you’re not the talky type. I wouldn’t blame you at all.

I believe it was the burnt ends that ultimately got the Chiefs the Lombardi Trophy. Not talent, not play calling, not overtime eff-ups, not the adorable romance between Taylor & Travis. It was the burnt ends that were cooked and consumed in Broomfield Colorado that aligned the planets and made the football gods smile. It’s obvious.

Saturday, August 17th—Driveway pop-up benefiting my brother-in-law, Victor Bencomo. Vic is currently fighting terminal brain cancer linked from burn pit exposure during his tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. Every donation will go towards Vic and his family.
