This week I participated in an Erasmus+ project funded by European Union. The name of the project was "Change4green" and we addressed issues such as sustainability, climate change, and sustainable tourism.
In this activity, we shared our ideas by replying to some questions such as:
1) What is sustainability?
2) Are individuals responsible for problems such as climate change?
3) How can tourism bring positive benefits: to communities, cultures, and ecosystems?
4) Can technology bring sustainable solutions to problems such as climate change? How?
5) What can we do to contribute to a more sustainable world?
6) Can a sustainable lifestyle reduce our impact on the planet?

And you, how would you reply to these questions?🌱

What impact does fashion have on the environment?
Certainly, a big impact: different studies indicate the textile industry as the second or fourth most polluting in the world (the studies differ in the methodologies and data analysed to draw up the ranking, which is why they have come to different conclusions).

Globally, the production of clothes has doubled in the last 15 years: we produce 100 billion garments per year. This unsustainable phenomenon, called Fast Fashion, has led to numerous environmental and social problems. Let us therefore analyse the environmental impact of fashion:

Fast Fashion and water pollution
20% of the pollution of global water resources depends on the fashion industry. This is for 2 reasons:

1. For production. The fashion industry uses huge amounts of water: just think that it takes as much as 3,800 litres to produce a single pair of jeans. The United Nations has also estimated that between 80% and 90% of the water used in this production chain is reintroduced into the water system without its health status being verified.

2. For the maintenance of clothes. It is estimated that half a million tonnes of microplastics end up in the water during machine washing of fabrics such as nylon, polyester and acrylic. These microplastics end up in the ocean, where they are swallowed by fish - which we then eat. This has become a serious and widespread problem: according to the study conducted by Newcastle University we all ingest at least 5 grams of plastic per week (5 grams is about the weight of a credit card!). What does eating so much plastic entail? We don't know yet, because it has never happened before. But knowing about these women who have had microplastics found in their placenta does not bode well. At the current rate, between now and 2050, textile-derived microplastics in the ocean could reach 22 million tonnes.

Fast fashion and air pollution
The garment industry generates carbon emissions estimated at 1.2 billion tonnes per year: more than the entire world's air and sea traffic (2015 data. Source: Study A New Textiles Economy). It means that the textile industry is responsible for 10% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.

(Don't say that, unfortunately, we already know the answer)
