Thaipusam is a time of devotion, sacrifice and thanksgiving, dedicated to the Hindu god Murugan, who symbolises bravery, power and virtue. The festival commemorates Lord Murugan's victory over evil forces with a vel, or spear, which is why spears are a significant part of the festival.
