Kind words about our Cut Flower Garden Workshop:

"I had the pleasure of attending the cut flower class in 2024 at Morwynd farms with Rachel and Charity. Fresh flowers bring me joy. My intent was to grow my own flowers so I could have fresh flowers adorning my home all season. The class included a variety of starter plants with detailed descriptions and instructions on their care, including sun exposure, watering, trimming (pinching), and cutting. By mid summer, I was filling vases for me, my elderly neighbors, and the school (lunch table centerpieces) well into October. I'm hoping to participate in the 2025 class for a new round of plants! Thank you Rachel and Charity!" -Jen W.

Spotlight on anemones! This is one of our earliest spring crops, blooming alongside the daffodils and hellebore in mid-March. By April, they're in full swing and I'm harvesting bucketfuls at least once a day.

Anemones come in shades of white, pink, and blue. We choose shades based on what we see YOU gravitating towards, as well as the productivity of certain varieties and colors. The blues of anemones are rare and beautiful and hard to find in any other flower!

They're elegant and unique and we love them! What do you think??

The bad and the ugly: 2024 flower fails that we’re hoping to avoid this year.

Yesterday I featured the successes but honestly I’m beginning to see it wouldn’t be an authentic farm season without at least a few fails. So here they are.

1. Lisianthus- this plant is prone to fungal issues. Until this year, we hadn't experienced it. In fact, we planted a few less than the year before because they did too well and we couldn't use every stem in 2023. We buy this in plug form (baby plants) because lisianthus takes SO long to grow from seed. Our supplier seems to have had a fungal issue. Within weeks of planting, 90% of our crop shriveled and died. There was nothing to do but try to plant something else in their spots and move on. Ouch.

2. Dahlias - Because of our multiple building projects, we lost garden space this season. We had to go out to the field where we had no irrigation. For most summers, this would not have been a huge issue. I've had dahlias out of irrigation before and we've gotten enough rain. This year it was a problem. It took forever for our dahlias to thrive because they simply weren't fed enough. Many plants were smaller than they should have been. Fortunately it wasn't as devastating as the dahlias but it wasn't pretty.

3. Dahlias - Remember the irrigation problem? Same for electric fencing. We use electric to keep the deer out of our gardens. The deer had a heyday in the dahlia patch right as the plants were about to (((finnnnnally))) bloom. Again, nothing to do but move on. And fortunately, the plants did bloom and the deer generally stayed away. But that first time was a sad, sad, morning.

How about you? Any difficult flowers last year?

4 fabulous flowers from 2024. The successes:
#1. Ranunculus (photos 1-2). What can I say. They had a great year and this flower is the best. Period.
#2. Uproar rose zinnia (photos 3-4). This was a new variety for us and WOW! Incredible saturated pink color, and profuse blooms! Next up is every other zinnia the uproar people make!
#3. Floret’s Alpenglow zinnia (photo 5). It was fun to grow something just released and while they weren’t prolific, they were gorgeous and unique.
#4. Aster (photos 6). These giant apricot asters took forever to bloom. Just as I was ready to cross them off the 2025 list, BOOM, they stunned us with multi flowered stems full of puffy pink blooms. And instead of getting the cut, we’re growing them in more colors!
#5. Celosia (photos 7-8). Celosia. Funny story with the celosia. We had about a thousand or maybe a million I dunno really, reseeded celosia volunteers. They popped up in the spring from dropped seed from last years’ plants. We had unused plant holes so I popped a bunch in a row and BOY did they thrive! Taller than me plants with tons of fun colored plumes. It was the gift that keeps on giving. Celosia will always be on our grow list!

What grew best for you this year?

Happy new years! May your celebrations be as riotous as our gardens in July 😁🤩🥳

We’re entering summer plant planning time. And once again I have to address my on-again/off-again relationship with poppies. They’re SO pretty. Carefree and wispy with those bendy stems and tissue paper petals. But they have the worst vase life. 3 days, 5 if you’re really lucky. So I just don’t use them much. What should we do??? Please weigh in, we’d love your opinion on poppies!
