Hello, my name is Brianna Orellana. I would like to talk with you about Lupus. I have started a support group in Lawton for Lupus patients; I have also started the first Walk to End Lupus in the state of Oklahoma.

My connection to Lupus is my husband, Alec. In 2019 he became very ill, we went to a different emergency room almost every day for two weeks because no one could figure out what was happening. Finally, his symptoms became so severe that he required a hospitalization. He would be in the hospital for a week or more and then be discharged, just to be admitted again within a matter of days. During this time his veins swelled shut and his blood started producing clots. Due to this, he lost all circulation to his feet. The only thing to counteract what was happening to his body was to immediately begin chemotherapy and aggressive steroid infusions. The treatment worked to stop his symptoms from worsening, however at that point, parts of his foot had already died. He required an amputation of his left big toe. After his amputation the doctors continued to experiment with different chemotherapies, immunosuppressive therapies, steroids, and so much more. The doctors thought they figured out a medication remedy that would prevent him from getting that ill again. However, in April of this year he became very ill again. He was hospitalized and discharged a few times, until the night before his birthday. He began to show signs of this veins shutting down again so we rushed to OU Medical Center. When we got there, only three hours later, it was too late to save his toes. His condition worsened so much during our drive to the hospital that he now required an amputation of his second and third toes on his left foot. His legs and feet went numb, requiring him to be wheelchair bound. In June of this year, the amputation took place and was successful. He regained some feeling in his feet and legs, however he will never regain full feeling. He still requires the use of a cane or walker on his bad days. There is no cure for Lupus and it effects each patient differently, making it hard to diagnose and even harder to treat. The likelihood of my husband becoming ill again and requiring more amputations in the future is very high. My husband will continue to be on chemotherapy indefinitely, which effects his livelihood and our ability to start a family. We want to find a cure for this disease more than anything in the world.

Lupus is a hard disease to live with, it is important to have people around that understand and support you, which is why I have started my Lupus support group. Currently we are the only support group in the state of Oklahoma for Lupus patients.

Lupus effects my husband daily and I have no way of making him better. This is why I have started the Walk to End Lupus for the Southwest Oklahoma community. All money raised from our walk goes towards finding a cure for Lupus. This walk will be a family fun event with face painting, raffle prizes, a car show, and food! If you are unable to join us physically, I would love for you to sign up as a virtual walker. We need all the support we can get to battle this disease. Together, we can be stronger than Lupus!
