Ranunculus love to bloom in the cool spring weather so here are the steps I take to get them ready for spring!! 🌱
1) SOAK CORMS IN WATER: This will help break their dormancy, plump them back up, and allow them to start growing sooner. 3-6 hours seems to be the sweet spot, just don't let them soak too long or they may turn to mush/rot.
Adding an aquarium bubbler helps to oxygenated the water while they are soaking. Although a bubbler is not necessary, its been shown to improve healthy root growth and reduce anaerobic bacteria growth that can thrive in oxygen lacking environments (like stagnant water). If you don't have a bubbler, other options would be to leave the tap on a trickle over your bucket or changing the water regularly.
Another note: make sure your buckets and other equipment are clean before using!
2) PRE-SPROUT: This gives your ranunculus a jumpstart to growing before they get planted out. These flowers are the Golidlocks of my flower farm! They like temps that are not too hot and not too cold! If I didn’t presprout here in zone 3b, they likely would not have enough time to grow before blooming, then the heat of summer would take them out!
I use trays filled with dampened potting soil and plant my ranunculus corms with the pointy "legs" side down, and cover with more soil.
3. NAP TIME: Set trays away somewhere cool and dark for the next week or two. You should start to see roots and sprouts begin to develop within 10-14 days. After sprouts develop you can move your trays from the dark and place them under lights to keep growing. Alternatively, you can plant them outside if your weather allows it!
💐 Who else can't wait to get a bouquet of these beauties this spring!?
