BAREKNUCKLE champ Aaron McCallum once had biceps bigger than AJ – and it almost killed him.

McCallum spent a decade competing in bodybuilding competitions before he took up bareknuckle boxing.

The 38 year old from Nottingham meets Scott McHugh for the vacant world lightweight championship at the O2 Arena on Saturday, June 1.

McCallum says he will avenge the loss he suffered when they fought for British honours last May, but win or lose, he says he’s glad he quit body building.

McCallum said: “I was 21 years old when I started.

“I had only been training for six months and my body started to change. I was strong from labouring and before you know it, I was lumpy all over.

“I had been training for 18 months when someone in the gym said they were taking part in Mr Peterborough.

“I thought: ‘I look better than you,’ so I entered. I ate tuna and broccoli for six weeks, came second and he finished last !

“After that, I did competition after competition. There were three or four every year.

“I was going to compete for the UK, but my liver was packing up.

“That was the end.

“I had been eating 10 times a day, chicken and rice or fish and rice.

“I had only 3 per cent body fat and looked great, but it was the worst I have ever felt.

“I struggled to walk to the shops. I had no fat on the soles of my feet and my legs used to chafe when I walked. I had to walk with my legs apart.

“I went to buy a car once and couldn’t fit into it !

“I had 21 inch biceps (Anthony Joshua has 17 inch biceps), but it wasn’t doing me any good.

“The only cardio I did was a 30-minute walk every day. I wasn’t building fitness, I was building muscle.”

McCallum made a switch to gloved boxing and won his debut in just 17 seconds.

He ended up diching his gloves to fight bareknuckle and won the vacant British title at the second attempt last September with a one-punch knockout of Mark Tiffin.

McCallum said: “I’m much happier now. I eat better and I can run to the shops !

“Body building is more dangerous than bareknuckle boxing.”

NOTTINGHAM fighter Aaron McCallum could be heading to Thailand after keeping his British bareknuckle boxing title in Wolverhampton.
McCallum outpointed Corey Healey in his first defence of the bantamweight belt he won last year.
He won the vacant title with a one-punch knockout of Mark Tiffin and turned boxer to beat the Welshman in front of 1,700 fans at The Hangar Venue.
He said afterwards: “I’ve never boxed like that before. I was cool, calm and better.
“I’ve heard there’s a show coming up in Thailand and I would be up for that.”
For two rounds, McCallum used the ring and picked his shots to win both sessions on two of the three scorecards.
McCallum didn’t put maximum power into any punches until the dying seconds of the third and Healey ended on his knees from a pair of sledgehammer rights.
McCallum stuck to his boxing in a quiet fourth before Healey went for broke in the last.
He landed his best punch of the fight early in the round, but McCallum took the left uppercut well and connected with the best shots for the remainder of the fight.
