🌻 WILD FORAGING WALK 🌿

If you are curious about *urban wild foraging* we have a special nature walk for you!

🌱Coming Sunday 1st October we will make a sustainable wild foraging walk along the Genneper park and the Dommel's margins. Here we'll introduce you to some of the most common edible wild plants that we can find around us, even in cities!

This summer Wild Eindhoven is proposing a different way of being in . A different perspective to a city, immersed in its blue and green.

I am partenering up with Paula van Loon, from Supcoach to bring you a Stand Up Paddle experience! 🏄‍♀️ We combine the best of both worlds: supping & mindfulness combined with a mini wildlife safari.

No experience is needed, as Paula will instruct you on the basics. And it's really easy to learn and start paddeling!

The first event is happening this Wednesday 7 June. Around 19h we meet, have a short welcome and explanations, then we go on the quiet waters of the . It is a perfect way to relax during the week, and June is a great month to see wild animals and plants from the water!

The other two upcoming dates are Friday 7 July and Friday 9 September. They are already online on Wild Eindhoven website as well.

What an SUPer adventure on the water it was! 🌊And an amazingly different way to see and feel the city...

Immersed in the sounds of the reed warblers, calling from both sides of the river. Witnessing little baby grebes already swimming along with their parents. Picking and smelling some fresh water mint growing on the river margins. And yes, once more, we had a lucky encounter with two of the most famous river residents: the kingfisher and the beaver! 🦫😃

All of this during last Wednesday's Mindfulness & Wildlife Stand Up Paddle experience, one of the best ways to end your workday.

My favorite moment happened when we were laying down in our board, letting ourselves be taken by the soft current of the river. I was watching the many swifts flying high above, listening to the birds singing hidden in the vegetation, feeling the soft breeze on my skin. Just letting nature exist around us.

Thank you all who joined for your energy, enthusiasm and stories! You were such a nice group of different nationalities and backgrounds.

I'm already looking forward to next month's SUP experience! 🔹Coming Wednesday 7 June at 19:00, we'll meet on the water and look for wildlife! Look for more information in Wild Eindhoven's website.

Everyone is welcome to join. No previous experience is needed at all, Paula (Supcoach) will help you with all the way!

This past weekend we had the first real days of Spring! And that could be felt also in all the activity in nature: there are 🐦🐦🐦 singing and chatting everywhere! 🎶

Robins, blackbirds, wrens, great- and blue- t**s, treecrepers, nuthatches and many others singing their hearts out, announcing their territory and their fitness!

The for the Water Boards (Waterschapen) 🌊 in the Netherlands are tomorrow, March 15th. 👉 *Everyone* living in the country can vote, including internationals.

and surroudings are included in the De Dommel. With our vote, we internationals can also help to shape policy and practice about how water is managed in our region in important things such as drinking water, sewage treatment (and associated taxes), managing groundwater levels for nature and agriculture.

A few weeks ago I accompanied Mado Ruys on an interview for Radio 4 Brainport. I talked about the importance of water, the challenges ahead with longer draughs and sudden rains, and why nature and farming should not be seen as in conflict. And of course why voting for the waterboard elections matters!

The elections for the Water Boards (Waterschapen) 🌊 in the Netherlands are coming up: on March 15th, 👉 everyone 👈 living in the Netherlands (yes, including / ) can vote!

And why do I care about this?

The Waterboards determine, and often execute the policies for management in this country. From making sure there is enough drinking water available, to regulating the groundwater level for farming and , to how natural rivers and canals should be. And all of this has a direct implication on and .

Some examples (from an original post by Trefpunt Groen Eindhoven):

🌊Water boards ensure that we are protected from water, for example by building and caring for dikes. This is important, especially given the increasing rise in water levels.

🌧️ The Netherlands also wants to retain water where it can, so that during times of low rainfall, we still have a supply in the soil. That helps biodiversity.

🚿 The water boards are also tasked with ensuring that sewage water is treated. Our sewage water is treated at the treatment plant on Van Oldebarnelveltlaan.

🦫 This purified water ends up in De Dommel and then flows into the Meuse. The cleaner the water in De Dommel and other rivers, the more flora and fauna we can expect.

Tomorrow 2 March, from 20:00 in the Tu/e Auditorium, there is a debate with the main parties running up for election for "our" Waterboard: Waterschap De Dommel. The debate is in 🇳🇱 Dutch, however...

How do animals find 💞? How do they find a proper place to live/nest and and choose a right partner?

That was the motto of today's Valentine's Day at the High Tech Campus Eindhoven! 💚

Dancing pairs of crested greebes, male coots fighting each other, magpies and woodpeckers building or preparing their nests. The signs of coming spring are slowing making their way. :)

Today, I learned something new: Although the most common name in Dutch for Jackdaws (first picture) is Kauw, they are also called "torenkraai" - tower crows!

And apparently every church tower in Eindhoven and surroundings has a jackdaw colony living under its tower's roofs!

This interesting bit was on IVN Veldhoven Eindhoven Vessem article in GrootEindhoven. :)

Our first Wild Escape 🦅 is scheduled!

On Sunday 19 February escape the city and join me for a longer (picnic included) in two of Eindhoven's best natural areas: the Stratumse Heide and Gijzenrooise Zegge.

We will walk across three different landscapes with lots of wildlife to discover! The home of black woodpeckers, crested t**s, goshawks and many more wild animals.

Just because it's winter, that's no reason not to go outside! ❄️

PwC Nederland included a as the perfect short outdoor escape during their two-days training with partner organizations.

So, we set out discovering and around the High Tech Campus Eindhoven! 🦆

And still discussed some of the good practices towards and ecological management of the campus.

A big thank you to Armida Almeida-Meursing for the invitation! It was a pleasure taking your group outside and into urban nature.

On the cold morning of past Sunday a very nice group gathered for our along the Dommel and the Klotputten. 🥾 And we were presented with a Winter landscape indeed! ❄⛄

Some of the and highlights we encountered:

🦫 several trees knocked down and chewed by beavers along the Dommel

🦆 great cormorants (🇳🇱 aalscholver) diving on the lake and hunting underwater for fishes

🦅 buzzards soaring right above our heads!

🐦a flock of lapwings (🇳🇱 kievits) resting on the grounds of the Klotputten nature reserve

The snow, ice and mud on the paths made up for some challenging stretches along the way; luckily, everyone came prepared! The shared hot tea and coffee 🍵 also helped.

And everyone seemed pretty happy in the end! 😃 Thanks to all who joined, it was a pleasure to have shown you this natural side of .

The next 🍀 Groen Café is happening Monday evening (23 Jan at 20:00)! This edition will be in 🇳🇱 Dutch, however.

The topic this time is in your garden and in public spaces, with speakers Jeroen Soontiens and Gijs Meijer. Participants will be taken through biodiversity and the that are associated with cities. Afterwards, everyone is invited to join in the debate. More information (in Dutch) below.

In Eindhoven is Gijs momenteel bezig met de nieuwe woonwijk Buurtschap te Veld en heeft hij onderzoek gedaan naar de waarde van vergroeningsplekken in de binnenstad voor de stedelijke biodiversiteit.

Jeroen Soontiëns (foto 2) van Tuincentrum Soontiëns heeft al jarenlang ervaring in stadsnatuur en is actief in het netwerk om de stad te vergroenen. Soontiëns ondersteunt o.a. actief in buurten bij Operatie Steenbreek. Welke planten adviseert hij wel of niet vanuit het oogpunt van biodiversiteit? Wat kan je er mee in je eigen tuin?

In elk Groen Café is er gelegenheid om te luisteren naar inspirerende sprekers en tijdens het debat te discussiëren over actuele onderwerpen. We sluiten af met een netwerkborrel waar we kunnen ontmoeten, napraten en inspireren. Welkom!

I am already looking forward to this Sunday's along the Dommel to the Klotputten! 🦫 🦆

We will likely hear (and see?) beautiful kingfishers calling along the river and meet large flocks of wintering songbirds.

Along the way, we will also look for signs of 🦫 activity, animal tracks in the mud 🐾 and enjoy the Winter landscape. ❄️

A wild tip for next weekend! 👍

On my first nature walk of 2023, I plan to follow the river Dommel looking for signs of the famous 🦫, listen to bright blue kingfishers, encounter various duck species 🦆 and other waterfowl (like the great cormorant in the photo), and visit 's newest nature reserve: the Klotputten!

It's this Sunday 22 January, starting at 10am (it's not too early, you can make it ;) )

Also important: no rain on the forecast! It should be a dry and cold winter's day ❄️

A temporary resident: Redwings (🇳🇱 koperwink) are songbirds which are only in the Netherlands during autumn and winter. ❄️

🐦 They breed in northern latitudes and come all the way from the far north of Europe to look for better weather and more food in the western and southern parts of the continent. During this period they also live in ’s city parks and have been seen here since mid-October!

🫐They love gorging on berries, which give them lots of energy to withstand the cold. Their size (up to 24cm long), their beautiful song🎵 and their group behaviour make redwings quite noticeable. That, and the copper-red colour in their “armpits” and upper flanks (from where this species got its common name), which is visible when they are perched and quite obvious when they open their wings.

Introducing... WILD ESCAPES! 🦊

I am thrilled to announce a new type of nature walks for 2023.

I decided it was time to also organize longer nature walks, in nature areas close to Eindhoven (for now), focused on the wildlife we can find there! And with a light meal included, picnic style.

Three Wild Escapes are being planned so far:

🦅 The first one in February, a half-day, 10km nature hike in the Stratumse Heide and Gijzenrooi. Three different landscapes - woodland, heather and fields - where we will look for black woodpeckers, crested t**s, goshawks and much more wildlife.

🐺 In July or August, in the Stabrechtse Heide, the rumored home of the wolf in Brabant and the summer residence for many birds-of-prey!

🐗 A hike in the Groote Heide in October, where wild boars roam and foxes and badgers have their dens.

During the last weeks of 2022 I've been busy preparing new events for this year! 🦔

Some 2022 favorites will take place again - such as the 🌿 Wild Foraging Walk and the 🌊 SUP Experience. I'm also preparing nature walks in new locations and looking for partnerships for more outdoor workshops.

It's still ongoing work, but the good news is: the first events are already online! 🤩

🦫 We will start the year following the trail of the bever along the Dommel, and looking for wintering wildfowl at the Klotputten. It's Sunday 22 January in the morning.

During winter, many 🐦 turn to urban areas to escape the harshness of the weather.

Tiny goldcrests and firecrests (the smallest birds in Europe!) temporarily leave their forests and flee to city parks, looking for food and warmth.

Large flocks of siskins and chaffinches look for leaf buds and leftover seeds on the trees; they can also be seen bathing in rain puddles. Redwings hang on shrubs and ivys picking berries.

Many other birds species can be seen in our urban parks. 🌲 Which one will you see during your next walk?

The holiday break is great to take some time to go out for a walk. Even if it's cold or cloudy that shouldn't stop us from going outside, there is a lot to discover in nature!

🌲The trees show us their leafless silhouettes, take a moment to admire how different they are from each other. Look closely to the color and texture of its bark.

🐦 Hear the robins singing from their low perches, a beautiful melody that fills up the air.

❄️ On frosty mornings, go for a stroll in your nearest park and take some time to admire details frozen in time.

And remember, there is always hot chocolate to warm up when you return home! ☕
