What makes Guardians of Heart different from other character volunteer or princess party groups?
Guardians of Heart was created with antiracist values in mind.
What does this look like?
1: Characters of color are only allowed to be portrayed by volunteers with matching racial, ethnic, and/or cultural backgrounds!
Why does it matter? Because when a child only gets one character who looks like them, it’s important for that connection and that representation to be genuine. This is so important to us, and so many volunteers of color can speak to the beautiful connection between a child seeing a character who finally looks like them!
2: Every single Guardian receives a minimum of TWO HOURS of award-winning (seriously!) identity and inclusion training facilitated by a professional. We cover issues like systemic and systematic oppression, LGBTQIAP+ identities, different accessibility needs, and the basics of consent.
We also conduct background and reference checks with all of our volunteers to ensure the safety of our wonderful community, children and families, and other volunteers!
Our work is mindful and intentional. It takes hours of time to plan, initiate, and maintain an organization like this. We’re truly trying to change the world of character volunteering with inclusion and accessibility, and to do that, we want to apply for official nonprofit status!

[Image ID: A gold genie lamp emits a cloud of dark blue smoke on a maroon background. In the smoke is a description of a fundraiser: “Holiday Fundraiser benefiting Guardians of Heart”. Below that, three bursts read: “Share for ONE entry,” “$5 for ONE entry,” “$20 for FIVE entries”. Next to that, a large burst reads “Over $500 in prizes!” Below that is the hashtag and a link: bit.ly/2VnfMYN with a QR code that reads “Scan Me”.]
