📅 Today, January 27, on Giorno della Memoria, we remember.

As we honor the victims of the Holocaust on this solemn day, we also celebrate the lives and contributions of those whose stories deserve to be told. Join us on Friday, February 7, 2025, for a unique tribute to Guido Alberto Fano (1875-1961) —a brilliant Italian composer and musician whose legacy was overshadowed by the prejudice of his time.

🎶 Event: "Guido Alberto Fano: A Journey in Words and Music"
📍 Location: Casa Italiana
⏰ Time: 7:00 PM
RSVP: https://www.casaitaliananyu.org/events/guido-alberto-fano/

During his life, Fano was offered three opportunities to move to the United States: in 1905, when colleague Ferruccio Busoni asked him to join him; in 1911, when he was invited by the College of Music in Cincinnati; and during WW2 to escape racial discrimination. However, he was never able to actually move to a country that was looking to welcome him with open arms.

As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth, Maestro Fano’s heritage will be presented in the States for the first time, shining a light upon his lyrical and powerful music, previously lost to oblivion in his own country due to his Jewish origins.

Pieces for piano, strings and voice, performed by artists of the Lunigiana International Music Festival (Tuscany, Italy), will be introduced by the composer’s grandson Vitale Fano, who will guide the audience with anecdotes and background from his interesting life.

Reserve your spot now and be part of this moving experience. 🎻🎹

The Italian Mediterranean buffalo or bufala mediterranea italiana is an Italian breed of water buffalo.[3] It is of the River sub-type of water buffalo and is similar to the buffalo breeds of Hungary, Romania and the Balkan countries. It is the only indigenous water buffalo breed in Italy.[4]: 94....

The murder in 1924 of Giacomo Matteotti, a courageous voice against Fascism, marked a turning point in Italy’s descent into dictatorship.

Next Tuesday, Mauro Canali, author of The Matteotti Murder and Mussolini: The Anatomy of a Fascist Crime, will illuminate the connections between power, corruption, and repression. His research is based on the trial records smuggled to London by the lawyer of the Matteotti family, Giuseppe Emanuele Modigliani when it became clear that he too was a target of the regime. Modigliani documented that Matteotti was investigating bribes from the American Sinclair Oil Company to the Italian government in exchange for the monopoly to drill on Italian soil and in the Italian colonies.
Featuring a conversation with Ruth Ben-Ghiat (NYU) and Natalia Indrimi (Primo Levi Center), we will explore the broader implications of Matteotti’s sacrifice and the struggles against authoritarianism.

🔍 Event Details: The Murder of Giacomo Matteotti. Dictatorships, Democracies, and the Oil Wars.
