There's a story behind every texture.
Whether it's Sir Kenneth Cobonpue's Yoda Chair or Noy Saturnino's "bukag" from Barili, Cebuano's history of craftsmanship weaves us together as a community of makers.
We were invited by The Kabilin Center to do a visual projection on this century-old Carroza ni San Juan for "Handurawang Kinamot: Cebuano Design and Heritage." A carroza (or karo in Bisaya) is a centerpiece in any festive occasion by the Catholic faithful. However, the beauty of this hand-made karo is marred by a tragic past.
This karo is a remnant of a now erased San Juan Bautista Church. Once regarded as the most opulent church in Cebu, this Cebu-Chinese community Parish Church of St. John the Baptist whose "altars were covered with stone slabs with money and gold inlaid," and church bells so loud you could hear it as far as Talisay was the victim of a religious and political game in the 1800s.
With its proximity being so close to the supposed more superior Cathedral, this Church brewed jealousy in its Spanish counterpart. In 1832, the Bishop of Cebu with the support of the provincial governor ordered its closure but not without its parishioners' protests. The church was demolished brick by every coral brick with some of it going to the construction of the local jail. One of the two "very loud" bells which became a distinct icon for the church would be obtained - or seized - by the Cathedral, while the other one made it all the way to a parish in Calape, Bohol.
During this demolition, with pieces of the church being torn apart and given away in all directions, the carroza was hid in Casa Gorordo. Fast forward to today, the church has been reduced to a tiny chapel next to the Parian fire station. And yet every 24th of June, the locals still celebrate the Pista ni San Juan 400 years on - with this same original karo at its midst and all the brass floral details still in intact.
