Do you know the history of the tradition of jumping the broom? This practice was known to be a marriage ceremony for enslaved people in the South in the 1800s when they weren’t allowed to legally wed. It was said to symbolize a new beginning and sweeping away the past. It also signifies two families joining together and honoring family ancestors.
