MESS ESQUE Live in Featherston
Aussie indie darlings MESS ESQUE are performing in Featherston next Thursday 7th March.
Featuring Mick Turner! Founder of The Dirty Three, and collaborator with such artists as Cat Power, Bonnie Prince Billy, Bill Callahan, Nick Cave, and many others.
Mess Esque features Mick Turner and Helen Franzmann. The duo released their second album - simply titled Mess Esque on Milk! records (and Drag City in the US). Things quickly moved along with an Australian, American and European tour. Their debut album landed in Jeff Tweedy’s Top Ten of 2021 and led to a coveted invitation to Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival in Massachusetts where they also played in Will Oldham’s band. Tours with Kurt Vile and Big Thief followed.
Through a patient balance of improvisations and a focused pursuit of something that wasn’t fully there at the start, Mess Esque willed themselves and their world into verdant, lustrous being.
For their first time in Aotearoa, Mess Esque are going to recreate these special songs with Keeley Young (Claude) on bass/vocals and Greg Cairns (The Verlaines) on drums. The results will no doubt be as captivating & mesmeric as they appear on the records.

This Sunday 24th September come and check out the music of Timothy Blackman when he performs in support of Mali Mali.
TIMOTHY BLACKMAN is a singer from Wellington, New Zealand. Classically trained in violin from the age of five, in his formative years Blackman revolted against convention, turning to the inchoate angst of grunge music. Tired of thrashing chords and depleting his lungs, Tim changed direction, beginning to mould solitary pensive songs on an old four-track borrowed from a friend. The lo-fi bedroom recordings weave together enigmatic and opaque lyrics and skeletal guitar picking. Permeated by themes of loss and displacement, the public and the private.

Greetings,
We are super excited to announce the next concert coming up in our gallery space.
This double bill features some of the most respected artists in the country's underground music world. Don't miss this rare occasion where they come together under our gallery roof.
* 1/3 OCTAVE BAND * & * THE TROUBLED TIMES *
"1/3 Octave Band" is a long running experimental ambient sound project, creating a distinct flavour of string driven shiver floating in a lake of orchestral sheen. Rhythm-less, with melodies forming inside themselves, like the surge and pulse of a wave. Hyper-kinetic drones fashioned from the slow moving gracefulness of supersonic spacejunk.
The mysterious trio, "The Troubled Times", play a loud and noisy nocturnal romp through the hills and onto the gravel back roads of one of Aotearoa's least visited regions. Like a psychedelic pub jam band gone BRILLIANTLY 'wrong'. Woozy blues paeans slip sideways into feedback freakouts, and heavy Hawkwind-like stomps, attempt to transition into songs, by The Fall.
