* New Poetry / Writing Meeting *

Come join us in celebrating the power of the written word, at our second meeting of the Not Dead Poets Society, Tuesday evening 25th June.

The Not Dead Poets Society is open to anyone who wishes to share their writings: poetry, prose, short stories, or anything else in between, in a supportive and respectful environment.

If you're an established writer, an unpublished writer, a secret writer, a non-writer who happens to write... then we're looking forward to seeing you there. 😀

This will operate similar to an open mic format, so feel free to turn up on the night, or let us know if you're coming ahead of time, and we can make sure that everyone has an opportunity to share their work.

The Not Dead Poets Society will meet on the last Tuesday of each month at Common Ground.

The crazy fun weekend of Booktown activities has come… and now gone. 😞

Our Q and A session with writer Madeleine Slavick was an engaging experience of poetry readings and creative philosophies.

Katja Starke’s Typewriter Bonanza workshops attracted people of all ages. It was a refreshing sight watching the younger generation interact with alien technology.

Special thanks to Elzette Bester, with her artist residency coming to an end yesterday. If you happen to wander past Common Ground you will notice her enchanting visual changes to the facade.

Lots more things on the way. Stay tuned…

Our dear friend from Australia: Elzette Bester has been staying with us in Featherston for an artist residency at Common Ground, and some much needed catching up time.⁣

Elzette is a multi talented designer and illustrator, so we of course employed her talents to give the Common Ground exterior some sprucing up.⁣

If you’re wandering past, say Hi.

TESS LIAUTAUD
w/ support from Jessie Shanks
Thursday 2nd May

In celebration of her new single Tess Liautaud and her band are setting out on a huge 12 date tour of Aotearoa. And she has chosen Featherston as the first stop!

Tess is a franco-american singer-songwriter, spending her early years between the eastern city of France, Strasbourg and New York, including a few years covering herself in music in Liverpool in the UK, she then became a regular in the music scene in Paris, where she performed nightly spending a couple years honing her performing craft, before making the move to New Zealand.

Influenced by songwriter giants like Bruce Springsteen, John Prine or Joni Mitchell, Tess' soulful voice sends shivers down your spine, with songs stemming from explorations of the soul on the road in NZ, reflections on change and moving forward, stories connecting cities to mountains, and back to the sea...

Watch the video for her new single 'Gold Digger': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR7GaUToRAo

Hitting the stage first on the night will be Jessie Shanks!

Having traversed the countryside for the last fifteen years in New Zealand’s hardest working band The Eastern, Jessie Shanks is a renowned guitar picking, banjo frailing, foot stomper with a sweet southern voice and a raft of songs built from years on the road. Shanks has cultivated her own unique approach to roots music, performing haunting contemporary folk tunes steeped in time and place and woven from her countless travels.

* Booktown Happenings *

Being a couple of musos and songwriters, we're looking forward to this particular event at Featherston Booktown.

'Word Gets Around' featuring Delaney Davidson & Barry Saunders. Hosted by the always hilarious and witty Lucy Cooper.

Delaney Davidson and Barry Saunders are storytellers who use music as their medium, and coming together as collaborators has taken them in new and exciting directions. “These songs just started appearing out of the kitchen air,” said Davidson, “and we were grabbing them as fast as we could.”

They talk with Lucy Cooper about “the strange territory” they share making music together.

Don't miss out on this one, and grab. your tickets asap!

Common Ground was closed today so we could hang out at the Featherston Record fair at Anzac Hall.

Well done to the teams involved in bringing this together, Herb's Mobile Record Store truck parked outside, and his awesome selection of vinyl, and to local band The Coffin Fits for playing their songs of hillbilly swagger.

We hope to see more of these events in Featherston on a regular basis. 😄

Indie musician Samuel R. Saffery is performing at Common Ground this Sunday afternoon.

Since late February, Saffery has been on a journey by foot, undertaking his 300-kilometre ‘Hard Yards’ tour. Setting off from Puketapu, the wandering minstrel’s journey will take him through small venues and bars in Hawke’s Bay, Tararua, Manawatū, and the Wairarapa, to arrive in Wellington in late March.

The tour is his first since returning to Aotearoa and follows the release of his new single, Day One. Saffery took inspiration for this tour from some Welsh folk musicians who did a walking tour in their home country, playing 40 shows over 60 days on foot.

Saffery was born in Wellington and moved to Hawke’s Bay as a youngster. He returned to Wellington to study and was admitted to the bar as a lawyer. After a few years working in the corporate world he made some big life changes and pursued his passion for music in New York.

“Hard Yards is a bit different from previous tours, where I’ve travelled with the band around the USA and Europe in rental cars, playing some big venues in big cities. Once we played the big stage at End of the Road Festival in the UK, opening for the Flaming Lips and St. Vincent.

“This time it’s just me and my guitar, walking for nearly a month through some landscapes and small towns from my childhood. I’m looking forward to playing in some small venues and local pubs. I feel a bit out of touch with New Zealand after living abroad for so long. I can’t wait to travel around my own beautiful country and experience the kiwi hospitality that I’ve told all my overseas friends about. For me it’s all really about reconnecting, finding home again, and I can’t wait to sing my heart out for my own people “.
