I’m walking through the frosty field this morning saying a final goodbye to the 2023 flower season.

Thank you thank you thank you to all who supported our little family farm this year. Despite the fact that our children requested that we give up this farming thing immediately, 😂 we’ve planted a mountain of flowers for spring. The countdown to the first bloom of 2024 starts now.

I started watching Lisa Mason Ziegler of The Gardener's Workshop start sunflower seeds on Facebook Live during the pandemic. She is a flower farmer, author and educator in Newport News Virginia. I tuned in each Friday afternoon as she calmly placed hundreds of sunflower seeds onto seed trays, pushed them into the soil and watered them in while explaining why she grows pollenless varieties, what succession planting even means, and what she fills her trays with.

The rest of the world was literally on fire, but every Friday she was showing us all how to make it a little brighter with flowers.

Several things aligned that pushed us to start Fresh Fire Farm, and her effort to share her wisdom and knowledge with the world exactly when we needed it was definitely one.

Y’all I met her IN PERSON last weekend. In real life she is even lovelier, wiser and more practical than on Facebook. 😂 She hosted an open farm tour at her place and filled it with industry experts, employees, family, an army of volunteers AND her Golden Retriver Tuck. Then she let us tromp through her fields and out buildings slogging questions as we marched. It was HEAVEN.

As you can imagine Jeff made friends with the entire club of husbands who patiently drove or flew their wives to Virginia for the fun. He really is the best!

My favorite thing about this flower farming journey is the people that we have crossed paths with, the small business supporters, wisdoms sharers and cheer leaders who keep me planting, harvesting and bunching even when the going gets tough.

Happy father’s day to the muscle behind the farm. The guy who when I said, “Let’s start a flower farm so our kids can learn how to grow things and be entrepreneurs” said “I’ll figure out how to clear land, put up electric fence and till this swamp into a field.”

He sets the hardest working example for our boys. Thanks for being the best dad eva Jeff Goldman!

This is what I pictured when I thought about flower farming before it all started. Sunrise in the field, God and I having a companionable chat while the puppy nosed around. So many days are filled with mosquitos, sweat, weeds and broken irrigation lines that I sat here a moment longer than necessary this morning taking it in, recharging to get me through the hot and never ending to do list times.

One of my favorite things about starting this farm is how so many family and friends have jumped in to help. Jeff and the kids are planting and harvesting almost daily. My mom and dad came for a visit a few weeks ago and they were making bouquets and helping at the market. Last season my sister, brother-in-law and nephews volunteered their time and effort to help. This year both of my sisters are coming from different states to spend Mother's Day at the farm to help expedite our big event! We've had the help of neighbors and friends and even our kids friends in this process.

If you show up at the farm we will most likely throw you a Fresh Fire Farm t-shirt and give you an assignment. The fabulous thing about my family and friends is that they continue to show up, they jump in and together we get to watch the magic of spreading joy through beautiful flowers happen. AND we all have a pretty good time too.

I talk a lot about the benefit of local flowers. It’s kinda my thing obviously. 😂 I like to let people know that most flowers available for purchase are imported and have been traveling for a week or more before reaching store shelves. Our flowers are usually harvested 24-48 hours before we send them home with you so you get to enjoy them for their full vase life, often two weeks. These were harvested last night and they are headed out for delivery today. 🌸🌻🌺

Fresh Fire Farm is offering mid-sized bouquets of the freshest and most unique locally grown flowers. Flowers we grew right here in Guyton as a family. We started the seeds, planted them out, kept them alive (in most cases) and will lovingly harvest them before putting them together into a beautiful bouquet.

Good neighbors are priceless. I made this chubby arrangement as a thank you for a neighbor who took care of all of our baby plants while we enjoyed a fabulous family trip to the mountains. I can’t do this farming thing alone, so I am thankful I have people around me who love it like I do, or at least like me enough to pitch in. 😂

Sometimes I use everything in my bucket to make a bouquet. Everything that was ready to harvest. I just trim and fit and see what comes out. I think of it as God choosing the design. Today God gave me a sherbet theme and I am here for it!

This is the goodest of the good boys. He is the absolute best company when I’m in the field, a dedicated protector and gentleman. He never digs up a flower or runs through a bed. He loves his people. All of them. He thinks my crazy ideas that involve a lot of work are great.

When I introduced him to my little sister we both squealed “you are the goodest boy!” while we rubbed his ears. My mom piped up from the kitchen, “I hear my two daughters with English degrees making me proud in there.” 😂 He really is the goodest!

This morning as I harvested the first bucket - small as it was - of 2023 flowers, I reflected on how grateful I am for this little corner of the world that God has trusted me to live on and steward.

What a blessing to walk outside and see the pinky teal of a sunrise through the trees and watch long legged birds fish in the pond. What a blessing to know my boys will think back on mud fights and forts, neighbors who help each other, epic nerf battles and glow-in-the-dark capture the flag.

I know I don’t have much longer left in this growing season. The first hard frost will do us in. So, I’m trying to eek out every ounce of beauty from all of our family’s hard work this year, before it is frosty and gone.

These went straight to my super fancy drying rack, also known as a clothes hanger in the closet.

I’ve been squirreling away flowers to dry all season and here they are, just in time to decorate for fall.

Each dried flower pumpkin arrangement is a little different but they are all made with flowers planted, tended, harvested and dried right here on our little farm by our little family.

I have two sizes/colors available. The mini white are $10 and the small orange are $15. They are arranged on fresh pumpkins so they are perishable - as all pumpkins are - but should last several weeks if displayed inside.

Free local delivery for orders over $30, otherwise we can deliver with an additional fee based on distance from the farm.

I’ve been trying to dry lots of flowers this year so I can make things this winter. You can find half dried stems that are too short to use, or are leftover hung up everywhere around the house - on the coat rack in the laundry room, on a shelf in the room under the stairs, on a closet rod in the bonus room, from the cabinets and even from the kitchen lights.
