This week in flowers: The heat is on! I’m trying to limit time spent in the field to early and late, but there is always more to do. We started more sunflower seedlings and planted more out. We planted out several trays of seedlings that immediately fried. Ah well. We will just keep planting. I’m beginning to plan our succession of flowers that will bloom in the fall. The lisianthus are beautiful this week but fleeting.

This week in flowers: I feel like the sunflowers are chasing me. There are two trays right now that should have gone in the ground days ago, and days is probably an under statement. There are trays behind those that will need to be planted in the next few days and there are trays behind those that are just sprouting. Behind that are the trays I need to seed each week stretched all the way to September. I usually plant the season’s last on my birthday September 22.

This week in flowers… I picked these first few lisianthus buds off of the growing plants. They are beautiful, but super tiny. The stems that they came from will bloom tall now that I’ve removed these initial buds. Jace and I surprised Jared and Jeff by planting this week’s succession of sunflowers while they were at baseball practice last night. The look of appreciation on their faces when they found out that after a long hot day they could shower and get dinner instead of spending another hour in the field was worth the work. We have our first few pincushion flower blooms. It’s my first time growing these so I’m excited to see if they will earn a spot in next year’s lineup. You’ve got to be productive, and not require too much maintenance to get planted more than once at this farm - unless you’re a dahlia, then exceptions are made. 😂I’m working on the fall seed order and never ending weeding continues of course. I hope all of your things are growing!

This week in flowers… Despite everything still being a bit soppy from last weekend’s rain storms we have been taking advantage of the beautiful presunset evenings to plant. We put in more zinnias, our first batch of cosmos for the year, mahogany hibiscus and hyacinth beans. It’s our first time trying the hyacinth so we’ll see how it goes. I’ve read that I should not try to grow everything, but I love EVERYTHING and want to try EVERYTHING. Well, everything has different needs so nothing is simple about Fresh Fire Farm. 😂 BUT even if it’s not simple, it sure is beautiful. Just don’t look at the row of bupleurum that I’ve simply labeled “failure to thrive.” Keep walking right on past that!

New this week are gladiolus and yarrow, as well as orange, yellow and white marigolds.

This week in flowers… We happily tilled under some under performing statice that caused nothing but negative thoughts this year. We thanked God that past Jeff and Emily invested in a bed maker saving us hours each time we flip beds. I pinched my dahlia experiment back - so far they are looking happy. We said goodbye to Nigella and hello to Veronica and Verbena. We’re on the sunflower train until November planting and harvesting hundreds each week.

In other news we got some veggies in on Mother’s day. Looking forward to Armenian cucumber as well as Trombincino and Gete Okosomin squash.

These beauties are headed to Brighter Day Natural Foods Market today with our expert delivery driver, aka Jeff Goldman in his mud-covered red neck truck. Bless his heart, he had no idea what he was signing up for when I casually suggested we start a flower farm. 😂

As we were weeding Jared said, “There are so many weeds out here. Obviously it didn’t work last time we weeded, so why would we do it again?!” No truer words have ever been spoken. But keep pulling ‘em buddy! We’ve got to give these flowers a fighting chance!

First bunches of the season dropped at Brighter Day Natural Foods Market in this morning! It is so lovely finally seeing them out in the world. We planned the field and ordered the seed, planted the seeds, supported the long stems, weeded, kept them alive (mostly), harvested the and created these custom bouquets to brighten you home!

Order your Mother’s Day Bouquets!

Celebrate Mother’s Day by supporting a local mom who makes her kids farm.

They call it “force farming.” I call it learning how to grow things and enjoy God’s amazing creation while giving our community a healthy and ethical flower option. Same, same, right?😂

$55 - for a mid-sized bouquet of the freshest blooms grown just up the road. Local delivery included in most cases. We'll be delivering Mother's Day weekend, May 10 and 11.

I’m walking through the frosty field this morning saying a final goodbye to the 2023 flower season.

Thank you thank you thank you to all who supported our little family farm this year. Despite the fact that our children requested that we give up this farming thing immediately, 😂 we’ve planted a mountain of flowers for spring. The countdown to the first bloom of 2024 starts now.

If Idaliah winds flatten the field, this may be our last bouquet of the season. At least it’s a pretty one!
