When I say ‘pristine’ Cable Beach - it’s actually me being sarcastic - I found 60 pieces of litter on Cable Beach Broome in just 3 minutes!!

Excited to be launching a 3-minute litter station with the Broome SurfLifesaving Club tomorrow.

Hopefully with the station and some simple education we can evoke and stimulate some change in people to move towards a circular economy. Even if it’s something as small as refusing a takeaway cup and bringing your own or going strawless this summer!

From the smallest idea can come the biggest action - with a global impact (well hopefully)! 🌎

Launching in time for Clean Up Australia Day 2024 are these 3 minute litter stations along with the message that it only takes 3 minutes to help clean up your beach.

Located at Fremantle, North Cottesloe and Sorrento surf lifesaving clubs these litter stations aim to educate beach lovers on what they can do to make a difference to reducing the plastic pollution and marine debris effecting our oceans.

It goes to show, that, from a ripple, you can make a wave.

Did you know there is now more microplastics in the ocean than stars in the Milky Way? 💫 😔

🍾 In the last two years WA has saved over 2.7 billion 10c containers from landfill - that’s $270 million in 10c container refunds back into our community!!

That number of containers is enough to wrap around the Earth 12.5 times!! 🌍

It was one of our BIGGEST littered items found last week at our annual Rotto Beach Clean.

Love for any ‘canny’ ideas on how we can help Rotto.

It is refreshing and a sign of viable change when your local Member of Parliament is not only behind the issues your passionate about but is keen to learn more and be involved in local initiatives too.

‘You never know where a conversation can lead’ ….especially when you mention that one of the highest concentrations of microplastics in the world is in Sydney Harbour (just under Kirribilli House): reference Minderoo Foundation.

Thankyou Kate Chaney MP💫

Last week's beach clean-up at North Cottesloe was a success, with 20 kilograms of rubbish removed!

Cigarette butts, broken glass and plastic bottles were among the litter removed from the beach.

A big thank you to the 30 volunteers who took part in the clean-up!

Bin | recycle | compost ? 🚮 ♻️ 🪴

Now you can’t buy single use plastic plates or bowls many of us have swapped our party and picnic disposable tableware to bamboo, sugar cane or areca palm leaf.

A common question is can we compost these?

YES you can.

Composting your eco party supplies once used is the best way to ensure you are doing your bit to make the planet greener.

Follow the image instructions.

Happy Anniversary Cottesloe 💫

It has been one year that these colourful call to action bin posters have been displayed along Marine Parade from Grant Street to Dutch Inn.

Maybe they will become as synonymous with Cottesloe as the painted pylon | Indianna Teahouse | Pine Trees and the start of the Rotto swim?

Designed by a group of students from they are the result of inspiration toward change that we aspire to achieve through our educational programs.

Check them out if you are out and about in Cott for this weekends or next weekends 🏝

A big thanks to the for promoting the efforts of this “littoral litter hero” along the shores of Freshwater Bay.

It’s sad but true, 44.5 kilograms of litter was picked up and logged with along this stretch of river last week. The good news is that thanks to the Eco Surf Litter Dinghy, 9.5kgs was rescued from the water and 100% of all volunteers will now change their behaviour to refuse | reduce | reuse and recycle ♻️

That’s a tick ⭐️

Now off to the pre-loved designer clothing sale. Who would have thought recycling could be so much fun!

WIN a double ticket to Rottnest Island

Come to the rescue and WIN an opportunity to join us "between the flags" as we collect and audit litter found at the Basin and Pinkies Beach on Rottnest Island Tuesday 13th December 2022.

Most of us think of Rotto as a pristine aquatic playground. An island surrounded by crystal clear waters and powder white sand. This is more than likely the drawcard for the million visitors the Island receives each year.

Last year, along this “pristine” stretch of beach between the Basin and Pinkies, we collected 72 kilograms of litter in just 90 minutes. This included a Brownes milk carton which was dated back to 1988. A strong message that plastic never breaks down, it just breaks up!

To ENTER TO WIN yourself a double ticket to join our Rottnest Island Beach Clean Up, email [email protected] and tell us what you think the most frequented litter item in Australia is?

Winners will receive:
- Sealink Ferry day return tickets departing Fremantle valid 13 December 2022
- Rottnest Bakery lunch for two
- Barista coffee, cool drink or icecream from Pinkies Café

Entry closes 5pm (WST) Monday 5th December 2022 with winners notified by email.

Entries to include your name, telephone, answer and email.

With thanks to our event sponsors and partners

Time to learn more about WA’s Plan for Plastics Stage 2 💫

Regulations are set to start in February 2023 to phase out more single use plastics including takeaway coffee cups 😳

I always thought my coffee tasted better in a takeaway cup -: especially the pretty patterned ones.

Now I feel a bit ugly drinking from one!

Let’s start a trend.

1. BYO keepcup (like my speckled ceramic keepcup) from my go to favourite 🌸

2. Join a cup library (swap and go). I think this might be too hard for me as I tend to accumulate fines from the library as I forget to return by the due date!

3. Skip the lid and just go biocup (but remember this cup can only be composted in an industrial composter - so really what’s the point)!

4. Sit down and enjoy your drink at the cafe in an old fashioned mug

Which option works best for you?

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”

A day at North Cottesloe Beach learning about the impact of plastic pollution and marine debris with Year 3 and 4 students from Perth College .

In just 90 minutes we collected, sorted, weighed and logged 8 kilograms of litter with (that's almost 1 kilogram of litter every ten minutes) including 5 dreaded nurdles (see if you can spot it in the photo)!

Our top 3 finds were:
1. Foam insulation and packaging; 50 Polystyrene balls;
2. Cigarette butts and filters: 44
3. Plastic consumer items: 34 straws and lollipop sticks:

"Never stop learning, as when we stop learning, we stop growing" - Loyal Lewman.

Today I had the privilege of inspiring a group of Year 11 IB students at Scotch College Perth and PLC Perth to make a positive difference to our planet.

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

All IB learners strive to be inquirers | knowledgeable | thinkers | communicators | principled | open-minded | caring | risk takers | balanced | reflective.

Eco Surf Australia is excited at the possibilities to further inspire, motivate, lead, energise and connect these upcoming change makers as they grow and influence local, national and global communities.

Hats off to the and their efforts to reduce single use plastics this year by swapping to paper showbags.

Simple changes = Big impact ♻️

And when this Howdy Cowdy was working out which showbag offered the most bang for her buck, noted were the lack of plastic toys and novelties which break after a day and end up in the bin! Well done ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have a confession as a shopaholic and lover of clothes. I often stare at my packed wardrobe and think "I have nothing to wear'!

Do you too suffer this problem?

Unfortunately we Aussie's are one of the highest contributors to our textile landfill issue. A garbage truck full of textiles empty each SECOND into our landfill sites! We buy 27 kilograms of new clothes each year and discard 85% of this into landfill.

It has now become on trend to recycle clothing (Kate Middleton is a big fan of outfit repeating). I have made some sustainable pledges to help make a difference:

1. I will buy less clothing (my husband will be VERY happy)
2. I will sell and shop more at consigner clothing boutiques
3. I will donate to clothing charities
4. I will shop with sustainable brands
5. I will look at ways to recycle, reuse or upcycle my textile waste to divert it from landfill.

What are your tips and strategies to combat the fast fashion and throw away society we live?

Eco Surf Australia's blog post featuring Australian sustainable fashion brands and businesses Jolyn | Namastay | Boody and The Green Pear Consignment Boutique is now published

https://www.ecosurfaustralia.com/post/textilewaste

Textile waste is a huge issue for our society, with an average of 23 kgs per person ending up in landfill each year. Unfortunately, we Aussies are one of the major contributors. A circular fashion economy including recycling | reusing | upcycling are becoming the social norm as Celebrities and Royal...

Forget macro - micro is the new buzz word in plastic!

Microplastic refers to plastic less than 5mm. The problem - like plastic items of any size - is they do not readily break down into harmless molecules. Microplastics can take hundreds or thousands of years to decompose wreaking havoc on the environment and our health.

My local beach has not been spared! The recent Leeuwin current has washed nurdles into the golden triangle. OMG!!

Our neighbours frequently have these “pre-production plastic pellets” on their shores however; until this year we haven't discovered any at North Cott.

This Saturday 13th August (if the weather is kind), feel free to come along and join us in an Ausmap Microplastic Assessment at Leighton Beach from 9am.

Dr Michelle Blewitt (Founder AUSMAP ) will be there sharing her expertise and knowledge as we sample this stretch of "pristine" WA coast.
