Hansel Law, PC

Today, Hansel Law amplifies the voices of the trans and LGBTQ communities in Baltimore. Firm founder Cary Hansel serves on the Board of Baltimore Safe Haven, an organization founded to secure and protect the rights of transgender people in Baltimore City. Here, he is pictured with Safe Haven Founder Iya Dammons (front and center), whose work saving lives on the streets in Baltimore is gaining national attention. Pictured in green glasses is Jabari Lyles, the Mayors' Director of LGBTQ Affairs. To Jaberi's right is Chef Eron, of Foxhall Catering, who gets up every morning at 5 am to make 100 meals for the needy in Baltimore and drives an hour to deliver them to Baltimore Safe Haven. We were gathered today on Charles Street just south of the firm's offices to watch the beginning of a public art project to paint "Black Trans Lives Matter" on the street. The firm is honored to support the efforts of these visionary community activists.

Pride started as a protest and a riot. On 6.27.20 Baltimore’s LGBTQIA+ community organized a Black, Trans, Q***r, and Femme led protest march for justice in the spirit of the Black Trans Womyn who started the gay rights movement that every person benefits from today.

Taking place on International Pride Day, the event was billed by the Mayor’s office as the major event of Baltimore’s Pride Week. The March began at the YNot Lot where several speakers offered words and perspectives from the LGBTQIA+ community. We made our way down Charles Street toward Baltimore’s City Hall where we held a spirited sit in demonstration and announced our donation to Baltimore Safe Haven which was made possible through community donations.

Among the top priorities of our protest march was providing adequate accommodations for the members of our community with a disability. Through donations from the community and a huge force of community volunteers we were able to provide a mobility caravan, a team of trained medics, a deescalation squad, personal protective equipment including masks and gloves, ASL interpreters to assist with the speaking portions of the event, lots of water, snacks, umbrellas for shade and entertainment. There were an estimated 6-700 in attendance.

This album features the work of incredible photographer and friend of Q4BLM, Theresa Keil.

Pride Began With A Protest: How Gay Rights Are Connected To Black Lives Matter - Bobby Berk

“While it’s hard to feel a sense of joy and community while so many are in pain, it’s important to remember and acknowledge that the gay rights movement also began with protests – led by Black members of the LGBTQ community.”
