Just bought a couple of meters of this lace from to hopefully go with my next wedding dress transformation...

I had other materials in cream but as soon as I put it next to the dress it looked super white 🤦‍♀️ I’m hoping this lovely champagne coloured lace will work well 🤞

We’re taking appointments for weekends in July! We are still doing virtual appointments which I must admit have been working really well particularly for the initial stages as we are able to discuss your ideas, look over a moodboard of images, and share my screen and go over sketches.
As we design the dress first then go out and source previously owned wedding dresses to use the materials or deadstock fabric we don’t carry samples so we try and give as much detail to our drawings as possible.
It’s a really fun and enjoyable experience and we encourage brides to keep an open mind throughout the process and trust in the process.

Once we have the design confirmed, we can take your measurements or you can do them yourself and send to us then we will make the first mock-up. This is when we really do need to have one-to-one meetings in order to make sure you we get the correct fit for you - there will be a number of fittings so your time is needed!

Dm us if you would like to make an appointment or visit our website www.gaiaandnyx.com

I’ve found our next dress! It’s got a 1920s style feel to it in its shape. It’s made of plain satin fabric with a beaded neckline. I think there are quite a few options for this dress....add a fishtail skirt, an overlay skirt, make the skirt slightly shorter and have a textured skirt or just add more detail to the dress overall and leave the shape...? So many options! What do you think might be good to do?

We make our wedding dresses using previously owned wedding and evening dress materials, deadstock and natural fabrics. It’s amazing what you can make and transform from previously owned wedding dresses. The fabric on the above skirt came from two different wedding dresses and the top is a mixture of deadstock fabric and fabric from another dress. 🤍♻️👰

Bridal separates are a great way to mix things up and reuse the top and skirt again for other occasions - it’s always good to reuse and recycle! Here we have made this bridal separate pairing with a mixture of deadstock fabric and the skirt material is from a previously owned wedding dress ♻️👰

We don’t just make bespoke dresses but we also make bridal separates, jumpsuits, trouser suits...whatever goes for your big day. We are all doing virtual appointments. Send us a DM for an appointment to discuss your design requirements.

Had a lovely response from yesterdays post! It was a lovely project to work on.
🧵As you can see we replaced the puffy sleeves with off the shoulder sleeves.
🧵Unpicked the yellowed sequins and replaced them with more faux pearls we used from the puffy sleeves.
🧵Removed the flower.
🧵Removed the skirt and replaced it with Tulle skirt with a long train. The Tulle skirt came from another previously owned dress!
It’s a size 6-8 and most of the material is Polyester.
It’s up on the website (shop the link or head to our bio) and 5% of the profits go to WWF.
🤔Any questions or you want more info DM or email me!

Way later than I wanted to put this up (due to the wonders of technology!🙄) but i’ve uploaded the 80’s wedding dress transformation! Link in the bio! You’ll have to forgive the amateur video...still learning and doing it at home in a small flat is not the best but 🤷‍♀️

For the transformation we took the 80’s puffy sleeves off and added off the shoulder sleeves, unpicked the yellow sequins and replaced with more pearls. Took the skirt off and added a Tulle skirt.

Let me know what you think!

Dress be up on the shop in the next 24hours!

Running a new small business in its first year is a learning curve in its own right! But I think my main learning curve lightbulb moment was focusing on one thing rather than lots of different things. Do something really well and don’t over stretch yourself! ‘learning curve’
P.S. totally missed yesterdays challenge ‘range’ but since we only do bespoke at the moment and we’re new, out range is very limited 😀 @ London, United Kingdom

Still playing catch up with with yesterday’s theme of ‘you’ so here I am. I’m Anna, founder and creative director of Gaia & Nyx.

I studied Design for Performance aka Theatre Design at Wimbledon College of Art. I’ve always loved sewing and making clothes but for one reason or another after uni, I dithered around a bit trying out other things.

I opened a shop in Barnes selling homeware and furniture for a couple of years with the help of my wonderful mum. When that didn’t work out I fell into admin, and on the side of this tried candle making and selling them at local markets and floristry which I absolutely loved doing and visiting the flower markets at the early hours of the morning.

Over that last year and a half, I’ve come full circle and rekindled my love of sewing and whilst making my own wedding dress, I realised I’d finally found what I’d been looking for in life and a way to build a business focusing on sustainability. ♻️👰

Totally missed yesterday’s 🤦‍♀️ so playing catch up! This theme is ‘Reducing Waste’ which is totally up Gaia & Nyx’s street since we make our dresses from previously owned wedding dresses! We design bespoke wedding dresses, then source wedding dresses and reuse the material to create the design. If we can’t find anything suitable then we will use deadstock fabrics which would otherwise got to landfill or natural fabrics that have been sustainably sourced. ♻️👰 @ London, United Kingdom

Day 4 of is Branding. I’m not very good at branding - I have two logos I use, can’t seem to stick to a colour and know I need to get more consistent with images but it can be so tricky especially when you see something interesting! I’m sure i’ll get there but for now this is currently the look/branding i’m using!

03/03/2020

⏳ Time ⌛️is todays and this time lapse is of me pinning the first layer of the skirt (sorry about the butt shot 🤦‍♀️) to one of my bespoke designs. I love designing on the mannequin, you can really understand how a fabric will drape, you can quickly see if an idea is going to work and often you get these serendipitous moments where the fabric will drape a certain way and you realise ‘ahh yes this is how the design should look’ 🧵👰

Today’s theme is ✨ Hands at Work ✨
Here are my hands and sewing machine working away at a new bespoke boho dress I recently made using deadstock fabric from (who I can highly recommend). If we can’t find fabric from a previously owned wedding dress to suit the design then we use deadstock fabric that would otherwise go to waste or 100% natural fabrics which are sustainably sourced ♻️👰

01/03/2020

Hello! Today is the first day of if you don’t know what this is, it’s a month long instagram challenge to help tell your business story throughout March. Today’s post theme is ‘Story’ so hello i’m Anna and i’m behind Gaia & Nyx 👋

I started G&N for two reasons 1) I had studied theatre design at uni and loved sewing and creating costumes and working with my sewing machine but after I left uni, I’d gone off piste doing lots of different things for a couple of years. I had a shop in Barnes selling homeware and furniture working closely with my wonderful mum. Then once that didn’t quite work out (due to eye watering rent and business rates) I fell into admin jobs so was looking to get back into sewing and creating again.

2) I got engaged, nearly two years ago now and decided I would make my own dress. To help me with ideas I looked at getting cheap fabrics to practice and play with but realised through research what the actual cost is of using these materials to the environment. Wondering what I could use instead, I passed a charity shop which had a lovely wedding dress in the window but what really caught my eye was the material. I bought it, unpicked the material and created something completely different. It was at that point I realised i’d found my calling in life, I found the joy of sewing something beautiful and a way in which to recycle materials that are often only worn for a couple of hours then dry-cleaned and packed away not to be seen again years later.

Gaia & Nyx is in its first year - only a few months in - and the response has been amazing. We did our very first bridal fair in London (pictured above) and loved speaking about G&N to brides and getting their feedback. I can’t wait to see what 2020 has in store for Gaia & Nyx! X
