I’m bringing the fireworks tonight at the Murray Hill Farmer’s Market!

(the papyrus foliage always reminds me of fireworks.
I will not be bringing actual fireworks tonight, sorry not sorry 😉)

I’ve caught a few lizards in my years, and my yard is full of them, but never have I ever had one hang out on me!

This lil friend climbed onto me and stayed on my arm for a solid 15 minutes while I worked in the garden today 🥰

My lil’ valentine (who’s taller than me by now but anywho) made us this beautiful red velvet cake for tonight, with skillfully done strawberry roses, piped frosting “roses” and lovely edible flowers from the garden! 😍🌸🍰

I enjoyed a therapeutic soak today in my Herbal Bath Soak salts 🛁

It’s a detoxifying blend of Himalayan and Epsom salts, my famous calendula oil, lavender and homegrown tulsi that smells heavenly and helps me to be able to move after I work myself nearly to death on the farm with a broadfork every Monday.

You can find this miraculous stuff for sale at market as a giftable set with an organic cotton drawstring bag and cute lil scoop 🎁

It’s not too early to start thinking about unique gifts for loved ones for the holidays!

Sneak peek of what I will have for market tomorrow!

I have the first of the first of my fall crops, and it’s not a big haul, so only the earliest of birds will get to take home radishes, baby kale, and arugula! 🐓

I will have lots of lovely flower jars and value added goodies, so come see me and help me get off to a great start for the new season 😁

Happy October! 🍁

Today I made my first ever batch of fire cider 🔥

FINALLY got to light a cozy scented candle (we rehomed my kiddo’s parakeets today after months of trying to find a good home for them-we discovered we prefer outdoor birds like ducks and chickens over noisy, messy indoor birds that cannot breathe candle or incense smoke or else)

And I made a monstrosity of a wreath out of some amaranth I was cutting…hubs said it looked like it would be messy and he’s not wrong, but he’s used to my shenanigans by now.

The wreath is sorta crazy looking, good thing it’s spooky season 👻

I planted brassicas yesterday- three varieties of kale, purple cabbage and romanesco 🥦

Today I checked on them and a handful had received this treatment 🤬

It happened just under the soil level and this time, it’s not the ants

If you have any thoughts on what it might be and what course of action I should take, lemme know 🙏🏽

And just be glad that I’m crazy enough to keep doing this ridiculous thing called farming regardless of the many, many hiccups I have had over these last few weeks!

Welp.

These last couple of weeks have been…interesting.
We can blame it on the retrograde, or operator error, or whatever, but lately it seems like everything I touch either breaks, explodes, or flubs up in some new and exciting way 😬

I broke a rotten swing and almost my arm in one fell swoop, burned up and exploded my well pump at home, overwatered and nearly killed all my greenhouse seedlings, and spent over $2300 getting my Jeep back running and air conditioned (and that’s in my off season, when I don’t make any money btw) 💸

So what you’re seeing in this picture is a small victory, that being I got my first two rows planted this week-with a bum arm!

There’s lettuce, cucumbers, sunflowers, arugula, radishes and a butterfly pea, which somehow all survived my horrible luck, and will be gracing my market booth in a few short weeks.

Now, whoever has the Rebecca voodoo doll, kindly take the pins out and quit throwing her against the wall 🙏🏽

Loving the proverb for today in my planner, very appropo…

Nine hundred cool flower plant babies got their start today on my dining room table 😍

I’m taking another crack at soil blocking, hoping that I can finally reap all the benefits of this method this season, and that these cute mini brownies will stay intact instead of falling apart almost instantly like in years past.

I started with a much finer mix so I’m thinking that might do the trick 🤞🏽

Here’s to stubbornly attempting things again that I previously failed at because I’m a better farmer than the last time I tried 🥂

*transplants one of last year’s rows from the farm to my home garden when I leave This is why gardening, like all of this life, should be treated as a grand experiment! I read on some online forums that one would be wasting time to try and grow lisis for cut flowers from last season’s plants. But they’re my favorite, so when I tarped the other rows, I left one row just to see what would happen. I ignored it for months, aside from it being irrigated, it got no care. When I was leaving the farm I figured I’d take them with me, they were small but looked like they had potential A few months later and they’re blooming, needless to say I’m going to listen to “them” less and less and see what magic I can create in my own garden 💕

The idea sprouted from a simple love of flowers, and the desire to grow and share them with friends and loved ones. Flowers make people happy, and buying from a local grower means you can find flowers not available at flower markets or grocery stores, as beautiful blooms like zinnias and unique sunflowers do not ship well from far away flower farms.
