ONE WEEK to go until the Seed Swap!

17th February, 10.00am - 1.00pm, Bridges Centre Monmouth.

This year we will have two clearly marked central tables. One for swapping seeds, and one for seeds for which we ask a small donation. On the 'donate' table we will have seeds from the heritage seed library, from Tamar Organics, from Real Seeds - and some rare bean seeds.

If you don't have any seeds to swap, you can make a small donation for any of the seeds.

The seed swap is run in aid of the Heritage Seed Library and ACE Monmouth - so it is a good cause.

Bring your seeds to swap, clearly labelled in a small envelope or packet. Please add year of harvest.

You can bring used veg seed packets that still have viable seed - but please, no very out-of-date seed. Nothing is more disheartening than putting time and effort into sowing seed, only for it not to germinate.

There will be lots of wonderful stalls - the refurbished garden tools and their tool sharpening service, plants, second hand gardening books - and local wildlife, meadow and environment groups giving information to inspire and motivate you.

And delicious cakes - teas and coffee.

The Monmouth seed swap is just one month away! Feb 17th.

Ideally put your saved seed in small envelopes with details:
- Name
- Variety if known
- Year of harvest

Commercial packets, or part used packets are fine too - but please make sure they are not too old. Nothing is more disheartening than to put time and trouble into sowing seeds, and then they don't germinate.

This year there will be two tables - one for swaps, and one with seeds for which we will ask a small donation. The donation table will have seeds from the heritage seed library and seeds given to the seed swap by Tamar Organics and Real Seeds. There are some fab seeds from Tamar Organics - I might have had a quick look through them already!

Cuttings, plants are also welcome - and any second hand gardening books which you can contribute to the Transition Monmouth table.

We're excitedly preparing for the launch of our new Heritage Seed Library Seed List for 2024. This year's List is a bumper issue, packed with 173 heritage and heirloom varieties, 14 new varieties and 71 organic seeds to choose from.

To get your mouth watering, we'll be sharing sneak previews of some of our fabulous heritage seeds over the next few months.

As the name suggests, this lettuce (pictured) is cultivated for its stem. This variety was collected from an allotment in Coventry and is productive both outside and inside a greenhouse. Its stems have a distinctive smoky flavour, which is delicious sliced and stir-fried.

If you're a Heritage Seed Library member, you'll have a difficult decision choosing just six packets of free seed to grow from our Seed List in December! If you're not a member - join today at gardenorganic.org.uk/join to help us continue to conserve and protect more of these amazing seeds.

Brussels sprouts: a divisive vegetable. At Wye Organic our policy is to cook them in fat at a relatively high temperature: roasted, or pan-fried, until golden brown and caramalising. Moving on from the great British tradition of boiling sprouts half to death has given us a new appreciation for the great British sprout! See for example this recipe courtesy of our friends at Langtons Farm, Crickhowell: https://langtons-farm.ooooby.org/recipes/brussels-sprouts-roasted-with-garlic-rosemary-and-olive-oil . Oh, and this week's sprouts are an unusual red variety.
(Please note that vegetables don't always behave predictably! Your box contents may vary slightly from what is listed below)

𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗼𝘅:
Potatoes, onions, carrots, leeks, red brussels sprouts on the stalk, pears, chard*, salad*
(small amounts of each);

𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗯𝗼𝘅:
Potatoes, onions, carrots, leeks, squash, red brussels sprouts on the stalk, pears, chard*, salad*
(medium amounts of each);

𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘅:
Potatoes, onions, carrots, leeks, squash, red brussels sprouts on the stalk, pears, chard*, curly kale*, salad*
(large amounts of each).

Items marked * are organically grown by us; other items are organic certified, bought in locally.
We only use veg that is in season in the UK, making our boxes truly local, seasonal and organic.
If you're intrigued as to how to get one of these veg box subscription thingies, you can read the full details here: https://www.wyeorganic.co.uk/subs
