A few text-based collages from my recent Dada Poetry Workshop.

The artists in this movement were big fans of collage. They referred to their photomontages as ‘visual poems’. They also played with text, cutting up newspapers to form surreal poems.

Of course, this is just one way to collage with words, but it’s one I tend to default to. I’m really looking forward to the next collage club - my intention is to try break away from old habits and use words more visually.

If you fancy joining me (and .by.battenade), head to the link in my bio to grab your ticket 🔗

It Started With The Starlings by Chris Snow ()

This beautiful book has been winging its way around the UK, being filled up with creative ponderings by each recipient. The other week it was my turn.

The book is a celebration of Brighton and the joy of looking up, as well as our winged friends of course. 🐦

If you stand in just the right spot on Worthing Pier at dusk, you find yourself in the middle of an avian rush hour. It’s dynamic and breathtaking. In my response, I wanted to suggest a bit of that movement with an interactive element.

Who remembers learning about contour lines on the overhead projector at school? Layer by elevated layer, a 3D image forms on the screen. If I’m honest, 8-year-old me thought that was pretty cool (I still do). That memory served as my inspiration.

If you are curious about the book and want to see what delights are inside, take a look at the hashtag - . It’s not quite flown home to roost yet, and has more plans for it so make sure to look (it) up ⬆️

✨Some pattern inspiration for this evening ✨

Bridget Riley is a British painter who plays with pattern to create optical illusions. By painting images that change as you moving around them, Riley’s work isn’t so much about WHAT you see, but HOW you see 👀

I took these pictures at an exhibition back in 2020. Like a lot of abstract paintings, they are best viewed in person but they are fun to contemplate!

There’s still time to grab a ticket tonight if you want to have a go at collaging your own Riley-inspired pattern ✂️

I’m very excited to be involved with ’s 1st birthday festival celebrations! 🎂

There will be SO MUCH happening so do check out their website. My slice of birthday cake is in the form of a Dada Poetry Workshop.

📆 Saturday 31st August
⏰ 2-4pm
🏠Chapter 34, Shoreham by Sea

🤔 What is Dada?

Dada was an art movement created as a reaction to the horrors of the First World War. Seeking to break down logic and language, the poets in this movement took to cutting up newspapers with scissors. They then rearranged them at random to create nonsensical poems – sometimes funny, sometimes satirical.

🌟 About the workshop

We’ll be embracing the Dada principles of nonsense, irrationality, and intuition! You’ll try a number of techniques to make a series of poems. At the end, you’ll have a small zine of your own Dada poems to take away with you.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never written a poem before, and they definitely don’t need to rhyme!

Geometry in art has a long history - from the decorative forms of Islamic titles to the (comparatively) modern paintings of Mondrian.

When it comes to collage, shapes, angles and lines give us a lot to play around with. And by not worrying about how to accurately represent something, you’re free to focus on the composition and what you reckon looks good 🤩

Take a look at this arty inspiration, and if you fancy creating your own geometric collage, grab a ticket for our next collage night on Wed 19th.

Lost a bit of my creative mojo recently. I find in these situations, it’s best not to force it and just do some ‘busy work’ instead. This approach resulted in me sorting my scrap fabric into colour-coordinated piles. Now I have a new creative problem to solve - how do I store these 🤔

It’s a good Friday (ahem) when you finish a cross stitch. This little one was part of my charity shop haul. For me, the second best thing about cross stitch (the first being how relaxing it is) is how little backstitch flourishes can really complete a design 🪡 🤩

Two little tutus blossoming on the carpet 🌺 🌸

I’m 6ft tall. My hips are wide. I take up space. I also do ballet. I don’t dance particularly well and I’m quite ok with that. I dance for the joy of it. However, a small part of me would like to dress the part of one day.

These two handmade tutus were a fun project - they’ll be going into a raffle this Saturday to raise funds for the dance school I attend - . Do check her page out if you have ever wanted to unleash your inner ballerina 🩰

Now, how much tulle do I need for a me-sized tutu 🤔

Today has been a good day 🌞

The Morning (pic 01): A work in progress kawandi quilt. This workshop was run by the ever lovely and knowledgeable over at (follow them both to find out about other workshops coming up). I foresee a lot of quilting in my future using this technique - such a great way to use up scraps. 🧵

Early Afternoon (pic 02): I joined the stitching group at as the team behind Sussex Blazing Saddles were there talking about their project. Sussex has a rich heritage of pioneering women, including the Victorians who hitched up their skirts and mounted (mens) bikes. Visit the website to find out more 🚲

Late afternoon (pic 03): Mounting my own bike, I peddled over to in Shoreham to pick up this gem by . Jordan creates amazing data visualisation using embroidery - inspiring stuff, which will be informing a personal project of mine later in the year.

Now I’m popping my feet up with, what I feel is, a well deserved cuppa ☕️

Did you know stones with holes - also known as hag stones - can bring good luck and protection?

This is my contribution to ’s ongoing project. Sometimes when we’re hurt, it’s easy to hold onto that feeling and feed it until it morphs into something cold and hard. This is my reminder to feel the feels, then chuck that hurt right into the sea.
