I had a great time this morning making ceramic badges with at .

In my fledgling art practice, I’ve been revisiting ideas, evolving or re-modelling them to see what comes up. In a way, clay was the perfect material.

🌞 Earlier this year, I attended a drawing workshop ran by exploring queer feminist joy. A motif that came up was the idea of a sun with roots (powerful yet grounded), and I’ve been low-key obsessed with it ever since. I’ve not sure how to depict the roots yet they’ll be added once this has been fired ( has also just released a comic book and it’s wonderful 🦑💜)

🔟🦶I started seeing this graffiti tag when I was commuting to London (on the side of the tracks by London Bridge). Now I’ve moved to London, I’ve realised Mr 10 Foot is EVERYWHERE. I Googled him and it turns out we both grew up on the Isle of Wight. Now when I see it, I find oddly comforting. Bonus Fact: I also used a photograph of this tag in a piece of textile art for ’s MA project.

🪨 Anyone who has been following me for a while knows I love a hag stone. So it was fun to create one of my own out of clay. I also want to reclaim ‘hag’ as let’s face it, witches are bad ass feminists ✊🏻 This was also inspired by ’s work with hag stones - check out her profile for upcoming workshops in Brighton.

I can’t wait to see how these all turn out (plus another two not pictured) once they’re fired! 🔥

British colour was polite.

The article that inspired this collage (and the print version of which is used in the piece itself) can be found on the Tate’s website…

Colour – The Unruly Child
By Lynda Nead
Tate Etc, 14 June 2017

“Colour was gradually and steadily being harnessed to ideologies of race and nation, according to which British colour was polite, rain-soaked and deferential. In fact, British colour was grey.”

Creepy poems for collage club inspiration 👻 Yes, I did use tea bags, and no, I didn’t burn the kitchen down (although I nearly lost one poem 😱).

“This Living Hand” by John Keats

This living hand, now warm and capable
Of earnest grasping, would, if it were cold
And in the icy silence of the tomb,
So haunt thy days and chill thy dreaming nights
That thou would wish thine own heart dry of blood
So in my veins red life might stream again,
And thou be conscience-calmed - see here it is
I hold it against you

A final ‘Horrorscope’ - at least for now. It seems fitting to end on this one after my first artist open house. It was an insightful experience in many ways - the delight when people liked my work, the thrill of selling something, and of course, the pleasure that comes through conversations and connecting with a community. Progress has been made and my outlook has changed! ✨

Progress can be made in most areas this week, and it is a most splendid time for those on holiday or taking trips here and there. New interests are likely to change your outlook on certain matters.

Take extra care to ensure accuracy in all you do, or mistakes might be made. Sudden expenses could present a slight problem but approaching the matter calmly will certainly sort things out.

An exquisite corpse ✨

I’m a designer by trade, working with words and websites. But every now and then, I get to combine that with the fun art and craft things that I also do. This was one such occasion.

Exquisite corpse - also known as consequences - is a surrealist game where you write or draw something at the top of a piece of paper, fold it over, then pass it along for someone to continue. The result is a weird and wonderful collaborative drawing - slide along to see an example from 1928 by Man Ray and friends.

Last night, I got a group of UX (user experience) designers to play in order to make a point about the importance of narrative in visual design. Their ‘brief’ was to design a website homepage for a fictional device that stopped sea gulls stealing people’s lunches.

As you might be able to tell, the room came up with some glorious puns (shout out to the ‘Chip Advisor’ star rating). It all got very silly - which I think is an excellent way to make a point.

📸 1 & 2: Hand drawn depictions of a website homepage for a fictional product called GulGuard. The collaborative drawings have been created with pen on large pieces of paper. Each section of the homepage has been drawn by a different group of people.

📸 3: Exquisite Corpse drawing from 1928, created by Man Ray, André Breton, Yves Tanguy and Max Morise.

Finally managed to make it to to spend some birthday money. If you ever find yourself near Tate Britain, I recommend popping in to see their collections - much of which is made out of scrap and reclaimed materials.

I absolutely love my ring by - inspired by traditional brush making techniques (and yes, it’s very comfortable to wear).

I’m also amused and delighted that Instagram suggested the Sex Pistols cover of ‘My Way’ to accompany this post ✊🏻

A few text-based collages from my recent Dada Poetry Workshop.

The artists in this movement were big fans of collage. They referred to their photomontages as ‘visual poems’. They also played with text, cutting up newspapers to form surreal poems.

Of course, this is just one way to collage with words, but it’s one I tend to default to. I’m really looking forward to the next collage club - my intention is to try break away from old habits and use words more visually.

✨Some pattern inspiration for this evening ✨

Bridget Riley is a British painter who plays with pattern to create optical illusions. By painting images that change as you moving around them, Riley’s work isn’t so much about WHAT you see, but HOW you see 👀

I took these pictures at an exhibition back in 2020. Like a lot of abstract paintings, they are best viewed in person but they are fun to contemplate!

There’s still time to grab a ticket tonight if you want to have a go at collaging your own Riley-inspired pattern ✂️

I’m very excited to be involved with ’s 1st birthday festival celebrations! 🎂

There will be SO MUCH happening so do check out their website. My slice of birthday cake is in the form of a Dada Poetry Workshop.

📆 Saturday 31st August
⏰ 2-4pm
🏠Chapter 34, Shoreham by Sea

🤔 What is Dada?

Dada was an art movement created as a reaction to the horrors of the First World War. Seeking to break down logic and language, the poets in this movement took to cutting up newspapers with scissors. They then rearranged them at random to create nonsensical poems – sometimes funny, sometimes satirical.

🌟 About the workshop

We’ll be embracing the Dada principles of nonsense, irrationality, and intuition! You’ll try a number of techniques to make a series of poems. At the end, you’ll have a small zine of your own Dada poems to take away with you.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never written a poem before, and they definitely don’t need to rhyme!

Geometry in art has a long history - from the decorative forms of Islamic titles to the (comparatively) modern paintings of Mondrian.

When it comes to collage, shapes, angles and lines give us a lot to play around with. And by not worrying about how to accurately represent something, you’re free to focus on the composition and what you reckon looks good 🤩

Take a look at this arty inspiration, and if you fancy creating your own geometric collage, grab a ticket for our next collage night on Wed 19th.
