Fat Macy's

Fat Macy's Life changing dining. Our 200-hour programme allows trainees to gain work experience, new skills and a deposit for a flat by the end of the programme.

Fat Macy's is a social enterprise that uses our food and hospitality businesses to give Londoners living in hostels a pathway to move into their own homes. To date we've raised £35k in housing deposits among 33 trainees. Find out more at fatmacys.org

129,000 young people approached their councils as homeless last year. That’s 353 people a day, or one person every 4 minutes.

The true extent of youth homeless could be double that number, and with the cost-of-living crisis, it’s getting worse.

Young people often aren’t considered a priority or taken seriously by authorities and services, and face additional barriers to accessing secure rental accommodation. In short, they are failed by the systems that are supposed to help them.

Fat Macy’s has joined 100 other charities and frontline services to call for the government to commit to a strategy to tackle youth homelessness now.

of recent graduate Amika’s headshot shoot

It’s not just about hospitality at FM. Whilst we offer hospitality training and work experience to all our trainees in our restaurant Sohaila, we also support trainees throughout the programme to explore other work opportunities and help them make the first step toward the career they want.

We’ve been working with our new partner to offer our trainees support with CV writing, LinkedIn Profiles, job applications and network building. Chris (we love you!), from LTR was recently on set to get Amika the perfect headshot and intro video for her CV. All these opportunities are important steps in a person’s journey from hostel to home.

Our first FM Foundation Advisory Board!

Perry, Shafik, Marlon, Annie and Sally are the first superhumans to join the FM Foundation Advisory Board. Having all been through the programme, they're in the best place to make sure Fat Macy's is as supportive, holistic and life-changing as possible.

They'll be meeting quarterly, setting their own agendas and keeping the charity team in the right direction. We're so excited about this next step!

“Looking to the future, it’s all about using the momentum we’ve built to get more trainees through the door and into permanent housing.

Probably my proudest moment was visiting our first trainee who had saved a housing deposit during the scheme in his new flat.
Seeing everything come together and realising that we’ve managed to get someone into a home – those moments are great.”

We've been on a long journey since we started in 2016 as a pop-up supper club to becoming a catering company and then finding a home in Shoreditch in 2022. If you want to recapture the magic of those early days supper clubs - head over to where our trainees are provided opportunities to gain valuable work experience, and our chefs are making the best food in East London (we promise we're not biased 👀)

(is that even a thing anymore?) to when we collaborated with Fabrix to bring fresh fruit and veg boxes to the incredible NHS staff on the frontline of the pandemic.

Let us know if you have any sort of collaboration in mind. We love working with people to explore ways to share Fat Macy's story and provide opportunities for our trainees and team.

Ever wondered what it's like inside a room at a temporary hostel accommodation?

Most hostels charge rent – the amount varies. You do not usually have to pay a deposit or rent in advance. You usually need to claim housing benefits to help with your rent in a hostel.

You'll need to show the hostel proof of:

-benefits (for example, a letter from Jobcentre Plus)
-identity (for example, your National Insurance card or your passport)

You may also need to pay a service charge of £10 to £35 a week for:

-meals
-heating
-laundry

The service charge will not be covered by housing benefit and you'll need to pay this from other benefits or income.

This is the kicker. If you enter work, your benefits will be reduced or scrapped, leaving you to pay monthly rent up from £2000 a month. This makes it very difficult for people to leave temporary accommodation because the costs restrict people from saving up for the deposit needed for a room elsewhere.

We're here to help people find a way through the complicated system and provide them with genuine pathways from hostel to home.

Meet Eliza, our Outreach and Communications Assistant

Eliza joined the team a few months ago and has helped us so much, from organising events to setting up collaborations and meetings, to supporting the Marketing team with content creation. A true asset!

Far from being truly temporary, evidence suggests that many people can spend three years or more in living arrangements such as hostels, B&Bs and caravans while they wait for more long-term housing.

This was a problem that Meg Doherty became keenly aware of when she took a placement at a YMCA hostel as part of a higher education course in social innovation.

She realised that despite working, for those in temporary accommodation, the high cost of hostels meant that many people were unable to save a deposit to rent their own home in the future, and started to consider how she could support the homeless community in a truly sustainable way.

And so Fat Macy's was born.

Jason, our FM Outreach Officer, leaves us today. It's sad for all of us, and also exciting for him as he takes on a new role in youth work and continues his work with Pivot (who are based in the same building as us so he's not going far).

Thanks so much to Jason and everything he's done over his time with us. Best of luck!
