Hollywood star Marlene Dietrich kissing American soldier Carus Olcott, who was returning to New York during World War II, 1945.

Carus Olcott was 23. His ship was returning from Europe where the 2nd Infantry Division had fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

"I didn't know, at 23, I didn't know necessarily that she was the greatest thing in the world," Olcott said. "They said she was a movie star, I was in the mood for kissing."

Carus Olcott passed away in 2021 at 97 years old.

There was a French city where, during the Middle Ages, the women had an odd habit. In the morning, married women would put a small dose of poison in the breakfast they had prepared for their husbands. Later on, when their men returned home during the evening, they would be given the antidote. In this way, the poison would not become harmful and affect them. There was a strict reason for this practice. Should the husbands remain elsewhere for too long, as the administration of the antidote got delayed, the men would end up experiencing symptoms like nausea, headaches, depression, vomiting, pain or shortness of breath. The longer the man delayed to return home to his wife, the sicker he would get. And, ultimately, when he finally returned home, his wife unknowingly gave him the antidote. In this way, within a few minutes, he quickly started feeling better. All of this worked as a trick, giving men the impression that being away from home would lead to pain and depression. Therefore, the husbands would become more attached to their homes and their wives.

Erected October 1901, with which he transmitted the first transatlantic radio message to St. John's Bay, Newfoundland on 12 December 1901, a distance of 2300 mi (3500 km) (although there is some doubt Marconi actually received this transmission). Marconi first built a round cylindrical wire antenna in summer 1901. When it blew down in a storm, he built this more sturdy antenna consisting of 50 wires in an inverted pyramid supported by four 210 ft (64 meter) wooden towers. The reason for the multiple wires of the antenna was to increase its capacitance to ground, to allow it to store more energy during each spark. An innovative 60 kilowatt inductively coupled spark gap transmitter in the station, designed by John Ambrose Fleming, produced radio waves probably at a frequency of about 850 kHz.
