Practice makes perfect and the same is true with your wedding day festivities!

If there’s something that you’re feeling uneasy about on your wedding day, practice doing it more often!

For example, if you’re not comfortable getting your photo taken, consider scheduling your engagement session, holiday card session, a session just for fun, or make it a point to ask family and friends to take your photos more frequently. This can be as easy as taking photos before every date night!

My fiancé and I were pretty uneasy about taking photos together but the more we do it, the easier it gets. Now we’re feeling comfortable ready for wedding day.

This might sound crazy but did you know that you’re allowed to communicate with your photographer!?

If there’s something you’re worried about when taking engagement or wedding photos, speak up early and often. Any photographer worth booking with will never make you feel bad or uncomfortable about speaking up.

If you have a favorite side, don’t like certain poses, or feel awkward with a prompt - say something!

My fiancé and I just took photos last week and he mentioned that he didn’t like how he looked from a certain angle. He asked the photographer to please call it out or reposition him if he started slipping into that pose. He was able to call it out in real time and loved the photos as a result.

I always tell my wedding planning couples that I’ll only ever be offended if they don’t speak up about something they don’t like and then regret it after their wedding. I’m carrying this rule over into my own wedding planning process.

In honor of Payton & Carson’s one year wedding anniversary this week, here are some of my favorite details from their big day!

Save this photo to use as a decor checklist for your wedding cake and dessert table!

Here’s what you might need:
- a fun dessert table (and potentially a linen)
- a cake stand for your wedding cake (make sure the base is large enough for your cake)
- platters for your desserts
- candles
- flowers
- a vase for your bridal bouquet or bridesmaid’s bouquet
- small dessert plates
- napkins
- a wedding cake topper
- cake flowers (and make sure you know who’s responsible for adding these)
- a cake cutting set, plate, and two forks (all needed to cut a wedding cake)
- additional decor to add dimension and height

Add all of the above and you’re all set!

Let’s talk - engagement photo outfits!

1. Coordinate with your partner! You don’t need to match exactly, but you should definitely wear outfits that compliment each other’s. Stick with similar color palettes and shades. My fiancé and I opted for neutrals!
2. Your engagement photos are not the time to take fashion risks. Wear something that you’re comfortable in and that feels like you. My forever go to outfit is jeans and a white top, so we incorporated this as an outfit in our photos.
3. Bring options! Check with your photographer that this is okay prior, but plan to have one casual outfit and one more elevated outfit. We did jeans then slacks and a dress!
4. Plan your outfit according to the location and weather. You don’t want to be too cold or too hot and you don’t want to distract from the scenery/backdrop.

Save this to reference for your engagement photos and good luck!

There are four key things you need for a successful outdoor wedding..

- Flower cups for your recessional. This one is oddly specific, but I’ve learned that just about every other type of container for flower petals will roll or fly away and spill everywhere.

- Umbrellas on standby. Especially if you booked your wedding venue to take advantage of the views. If this is your nonnegotiable and a tent isn’t allowed or feasible, then umbrellas are a must.

- Guests with a positive attitude. Colorado weather can be aggressive to say the least, and I’ve seen firsthand the impact of positive guests that are willing to brave the storm to celebrate the couple. (I’ve also seen the opposite, but we won’t get into that).

- An epic vendor team that knows how to roll with the punches.

Before, during, and after the sweetest first look.

This is SUCH an intimate moment on your wedding day, so make sure you have a plan to execute it successfully and a professional vendor team that know how and when to slightly tweak the plan.

In this instance, there were a few circumstances that impacted Rachel & Michael’s first look - rain and nerves.

Luckily, we confirmed ahead of time with their venue coordinator that the venue had enough umbrellas for both the wedding party and their guests (this isn’t standard but is absolutely amazing) so it wasn’t an issue.

Michael, the groom, was feeling a bit overwhelmed before the first look (which is completely normal) so their photographer and I decided to walk him to the first look location and give him a private moment while we both went to get Rachel, the bride.

Ultimately, the first look went great and they were so happy, but this goes to show that surrounding yourselves with professional, empathetic vendors can make all the difference.
