Never in a million years did we think we would have a foal, let alone an orphan foal. Lifelong learning is key to delivering high-quality care for our herd.
For this Foal Friday, we wanted to share that we completed a Foal Training and Handling course! The self-paced course estimated completion time was 10-15 hours. We made time between Blue's feedings or when we couldn't go back to sleep during late night feedings.

Our emotions associated with Out of the Blue is a mix of compassion, sadness because his momma rejected him, and a sense of responsibility to care for him as he needs our support to survive, grow, & thrive. The worry of the weather, proper nutrition, & essential donkey behavior. The significant time and effort with frequent feedings-
IS ALL WORTH IT! Our feelings for this lil guy is next level. 🥹

It's Foal Friday! Human dad was away at training this week, so Baby Blue 💙 went to Donkey Daycare at the Creede Animal Clinic. Blue weighs 55.3 lbs now! He gets fed every 4 hours for 6 feedings a day. Chow time is his favorite time! He now gets a milk beard from bucket feeding. He's growing up too fast! 🥹

One week ago, we were surprised by the arrival of baby b***o, Out of the Blue. We made several attempts to help him nurse from his mom, but she made certain to convey her decision that she was absolutely not ready to be a momma. To keep him safe, we took Baby Blue and his mom to the Creede Animal Clinic seeking the guidance of veterinary medicine. After several attempts at the clinic, we accepted we had an orphan foal. Absent the option of his momma, the next best case was to pair him with a "nurse" jenny and start her on hormones in an effort to produce milk. We were informed that sometimes this doesn't work. Baby Blue was started on a colostrum supplement, getting fed every 1-2 hours around the clock. Not all jennies are good candidates for the role and responsibility of a nurse jenny. We knew we needed to select a jenny who is well trained, handled, with a calm temperament, gentle, and an experienced mom. We selected California Breakfast Burritos graduate, BLM b***o Lola to be Baby Blue's foster mom. While we were eager to start Lola on hormones, we were informed that they were on backorder! The plan was to introduce them both and establish their new relationship safely, so Baby Blue was a house donkey for one night. Baby Blue had blood work and xrays. His protein was low most likely from not getting true colostrum. He wasn't bearing weight on his right rear leg. Nothing is broken, but he was sore from either being stepped on, kicked, or bitten. He did receive an injection and a topical ointment to help with his recovery. His temperature was within normal limits and his ticker 💙 sounds good. His last weigh in was 43.4 lbs. Although Baby Blue is as cute as a button, we know how important it is for his early development to be a b***o. Sure, we can nurture him, but we are not donkeys. Lola has not started hormones, but we made the PERFECT choice! She is the best b***ositter we could have hoped for! Not only is she providing companionship, but she is the perfec
